    - A stalk of corn waiting for harvest started as a seed; our community's the same. We're planting the seed of brighter tomorrows today. The Sparta Farmers' Market gives local vendors and farmers a place to come together and celebrate good, hard, honest work - the work done by the hands of our neighbors. Since 2011, we have featured many of the area's best farmers and artisans, we have grown into one of NW New Jersey's premier markets with over 25 local farmers and artisans weekly. We also feature weekly cooking demonstrations, live music and more.
    Come out and help us grow.

  • | All Day | Shows, Festivals, and Fairs, 5K Race, Music, Street Fair
    - To kick off the day, Netcong Recreation proudly presents the Netcong Day 8th Annual 5K Run-Walk. The event is US Track and Field sanctioned, but is open to ALL runners and walkers. The START-FINISH line is at Borough Hall, 23 Maple Ave and rolls through our beautiful downtown and continues along the banks of the scenic Lake Musconetcong. Registration starts at 8:30 AM at Borough Hall and the 5K kicks off at 10:30 AM sharp.

    The Mayor’s Cup will be presented to the fastest male and female runners and the plaques to the top 2nd and 3rd place in several age groups. Teams of 5 or more are also invited to compete for the team awards.

    5K participants receive the official Netcong 5K 2015 T-Shirt and Goodie Bags while supplies last. Same day on-site registration, or register online at http://netcong.org/2015-netcong-5k-race/

    Immediately following the 5K, our 28th Annual Street Fair will be held on Main Street starting at 11:00 AM. We are expecting many vendors including your favorite foods and Netcong Businesses –a Karate demonstration, and presentation by the Lenape Valley Regional High School Cheerleaders to name but a few of the event during the course of the day. Once again this year the Netcong Community Partnership (NCP) will sponsor a fun filled children’s area including several inflatables to bounce around on and a great DJ team for the young and the young at heart.
    While enjoying the street fair, be sure to take in a few minutes of great music at our Netcong Day Music Fest featuring one the best southern rock music bands in New Jersey as well as other performers. The music is on Main Street, close the NJ Transit parking lot and runs from Noon to 4:30 PM.
    Parking is FREE and available at the Netcong Train Station including an ample supply of specially designated Handicap available spots set up especially for Netcong Day events.

    - Patriot Day falls on 11th September (also commonly known as ‘Nine-Eleven’) and is remembered globally as the anniversary of the catastrophic terrorist attacks on the USA of 11th September 2001.

    Embedded in the memories of everyone who lived through it, this was the day four jet planes were hijacked and crashed into the New York World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, causing the deaths of 2,977 people. The fourth plane (United Airlines Flight 93) was directed at Washington DC, but its passengers bravely attempted to take back control and it crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

    The large majority of those lost after the attacks on the Twin Towers were working at or above the points of collision; thousands of people who had gone to work that morning like every other day, found themselves suddenly stranded at the top of a burning skyscraper. A number made the choice to jump from the flaming buildings rather than wait to be caught by the flames or for the building to collapse. No one could forget the terrifying and heartbreaking stories and images captured by the news footage of the day.

    In the wake of the World Trade Center collisions, many brave men and women from the emergency services risked their lives to try to help rescue victims of the attacks, and of them 411 lost their own lives attempting to fight fires and rescue people.

    Patriot Day is recognized by US law as the official day of remembrance for these tragic events, and has been observed every year since. Each year on this day, American flags are flown at half-staff to honour and commemorate those lives lost. The US President asks fellow Americans to observe a moment of silence at 8.46am (Eastern Daylight Time), the time of the first plane collision into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

    While the events took place within the USA, the shock and grief experienced in response to the attacks was shared across the globe, and for this reason Patriot Day will be observed not only in America, but all over the world

    - The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated with Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia. Her primary motivation was to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in 1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

    - Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. The Biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah or the Feast of Trumpets. It is the first of the High Holy Days or Yamim Nora'im ("Days of Awe") which usually occur in the early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. Rosh Hashanah is a two-day celebration, which begins on the first day of Tishrei. Tishrei is the first month of the Jewish civil year, but the seventh month of the ecclesiastical year.

    The day is said to be the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve, the first man and woman, and their first actions toward the realization of humanity's role in God's world. Rosh Hashanah customs include sounding the shofar (a hollowed-out ram's horn) and eating symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey to evoke a "sweet new year".

    This year, Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset on September 13th and ends on the evening of September 15th. During Rosh Hashanah services, and at the end of Yom Kippur, the shofar is blown like a trumpet. Hearing the shofar's call is a reminder for us to look inward and repent for the sins of the past year.
