    - The 2016 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the film, Back to the Battlefield: Remembering D-Day. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, December 7th in the McCown Auditorium at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
“Back to the Battlefield” follows the late Mike Fitch of Conway, an 89 year-old D-Day veteran, as he returned to Omaha Beach in France for the first time since landing as an American combat soldier on June 6, 1944. Attached to the 116th Regimental Combat Team on D-Day, Fitch landed in the second wave of American troops on Charlie Sector, which was one of “Bloody Omaha’s” deadliest landing sites.
Shot on location in France, Back to the Battlefield leads the viewer through the beaches, battlefields, hedgerows and villages of modern Normandy. Enhanced by historic newsreel footage, the one-hour documentary chronicles the dramatic story of D-Day as retold on-the-scene by Fitch, a World War II combat veteran whose vivid memories give viewers a unique you-are-there exposure to the world-changing events of D-Day. The documentary was produced by author and historian Rod Gragg and David Parker and Dennis Reed, who are video producers at Coastal Carolina University. The documentary was sponsored by Goldfinch Funeral Services, Coastal Carolina University, HTC and Joseph Sanders Dentistry of Conway

  • - On December 7, 1941 at 7:55AM (local time), "a date that will live in infamy," nearly 200 Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, long considered the US "Gibraltar of the Pacific." The raid, which lasted little more than one hour, left nearly 3,000 dead. Almost the entire US Pacific Fleet was at anchor there, and few ships escaped damage. Several were sunk or disabled, while 200 US aircraft on the ground were destroyed. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought about immediate US entry into WWII, a declaration of war being requested by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and approved by Congress December 8, 1941.

  • | 1:00pm - 2:00pm | Local Events, History, Museum, Film, Lecture, Free, Family, Arts, Slavery
    - The Horry County Museum will host a lecture by George Wingard, from the Savannah River Archaeological Research Program (SRARP), on December 8th at 1:00 PM. Mr. Wingard will discuss the discovery of an alkaline-glazed stoneware vessel created by the enslaved potter Dave of Edgefield, South Carolina and discovered/excavated by the SRARP. He will also highlight its uses assisting with public outreach and discussing the importance of history and archaeology. A viewing of the film Discovering Dave: Spirit Captured in Clay will take place following the lecture.
George Wingard joined the SRARP staff in 1993 with a B.A. in Humanities from the University of South Carolina. He is now the Program Coordinator and oversees the budgets, personnel and daily administration. The SRARP is a division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology (SCIAA) which is a department of the University of South Carolina. The SRARP is located on the Savannah River Site (SRS) a Department of Energy (DOE) facility straddling Aiken, Barnwell, and Allendale counties.
George’s area of interests is the historic towns and remnant cemeteries located on the SRS, eighteenth and nineteenth century stoneware of the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), and the mill village of Graniteville, founded by textile giant William Gregg. George is also the co-producer of the documentary Discovering Dave: Spirit Captured in Clay detailing the life and times of the enslaved Edgefield, South Carolina Potter David Drake. The film has been screened throughout the United States and is being used as a teaching aid at several universities. Most recently Wingard aided in identifying a quilt in the collections of the University of South Carolina at Aiken as having been created by Marina Gregg, William Gregg's wife. The only other example of her quilt work is housed at the Charleston Museum in Charleston, South Carolina. Wingard recently finished a documentary about the former SRS community of Hawthorne and two of its last living residents visiting their former home place. The film is entitled "Reconstructing Hawthorne."

    - The City of North Myrtle Beach and Barefoot Resort and Golf are collaborating on a wonderful golf tournament that will benefit the children of our community. All proceeds from the event will go towards North Myrtle Beach’s Shop with a Cop program.

Shop with a Cop is a Christmas program for children in need at North Myrtle Beach Elementary. Guidance Counselors at each school choose children to receive the benefits of this program. Children are fed lunch and given a $100 Wal-Mart gift card. North Myrtle Beach police officers and volunteers help guide children on purchasing presents and necessity items, such as winter coats. Our goal is to raise enough money to provide an unforgettable Christmas for 100 children in our community.

Registration forms are available at the J. Bryan Floyd Community Center. This year’s event will be held Fridayday, December 9, 2016 on the Love course at Barefoot Resort and Golf in North Myrtle Beach.

Welcome to Pirate Adventures of Myrtle Beach! A place where children come to experience the magic of sailing away in search of sunken treasure. Come aboard our pirate ship and get caught up in this real life adventure. Be amazed as our crew taps into the wonder of a child’s imagination. Your child will be painted with a curly mustache or with an anchor tattoo, dressed with a lucky tea sure hunting vest and marched off to the ship.

Once aboard, the young pirates will learn the rules at sea aboard the Sea Gypsy and use a treasure map to find the sunken treasure. As the crew searches for clues, they discover that Pirate Pete, the smiliest, most rotten, pirate on the Seven Seas, is lurking nearby, and he has something our brave crew needs. Off we go into battle with our famous water cannons! Will the crew defeat Pirate Pete and find the sunken treasure!?!

The 2016 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the locally produced film, Season of Valor: The Battle of the Bulge. The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, December 14th in the McCown Auditorium at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
“Season of Valor” was shot on location in Belgium, and chronicles the story of World War II’s Battle of the Bulge, fought in December of 1944, where American forces repulsed a massive, counterattack by the German army in Belgium’s Ardennes region. The battle resulted in more American casualties than any other engagement in the European Theater of World War II. Sir Winston Churchill, the British prime minister during World War II, said of the Battle of the Bulge: “This [was] undoubtedly the greatest American battle of the war and will, I believe, be regarded as an ever-famous American victory.”
Produced by historian Rod Gragg, the film features on-camera commentary by South Carolina veterans of the Battle of the Bulge and historic archival footage from World War II, including film footage captured from the German army during the battle. The film is sponsored as a public service by Goldfinch Funeral Services, Coastal Carolina University, Joseph Sanders Dentistry of Conway and HTC.
The Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2016. For a full list of films, visit our website at click for details. For more information, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail at HCGMuseum@horrycounty.org
