    - Discover Wildlife Summer Camp is held at Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehabilitation Center located at 570 N 450 E, Valparaiso, IN 46383. Each camp session is held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Campers will have an exciting day of learning about our native wildlife and the environment they live in, all while having fun! Each camp offers a different theme, so campers are welcome to participate in both camps.

Fees: One camp session is $150 per child and two camp sessions are $275 per child.

Registration forms can be found at http://www.mrwildliferehab.org . For additional questions, please contact Nicole Harmon at nharmon@mrwildliferehab.org or at 219.299.8027.

    July 11-15
    Animal Habitats (5-12 year olds)

Campers will learn about different habitats and species that reside there. Campers will be asked to come up with their own unique species and provide all the essential information for that species. They will then spend time creating a "shoe box" habitat for their new species. At the end of camp, each camper will present their new animal to the rest of the campers and provide everyone with the animal's natural history.

    July 25-29
    Predator/Prey Relationships (5-12 year olds)

Campers will be introduced to predator species in Indiana and the role they play in maintaining a healthy environment. Campers will be asked to consider what would happen to the environment should key predators be removed. Throughout the week, campers will learn of instances in the environment where predators have been eradicated and the ways this impacts the environment.

Want to find out about which beach will best meet your needs? Just stop by the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. Our front desk destination concierges are very knowledgeable and can explain beach options, provide directions to each, and help you find the perfect location for you. If you happen to drop by after hours, the brochure-stocked vestibule is open around the clock and you can find maps there. You can also walk through our ever-changing exhibit room, learn about the history and ecology of the Dunes at our in-house movie theatre and pick out educational mementos in our bookstore. Don’t miss… taking a walk around our building and learning about its eco-friendly architecture. Go to each station to learn about rain gardens and native landscaping, and get ideas of environmentally friendly things you can do at home.

    About
If you are the type that will WALK MILES TO GET TO A SECLUDED BEACH, this is your spot. On your way to the beach you will walk through the remnant of the once-widespread wetland system called Cowles Bog. The bog encompasses a marsh surrounding a small fen, where a stand of tamaracks and white pines grows on a floating mat of peat moss. Starting near the guardhouse in the northeastern part of the site, a boardwalk trail passes marshes and ponds that host horned grebes, black-crowned night herons, buffleheads, and a myriad of other water birds. You can hike right out to the beach and back on 4.5 miles of interconnecting loop trails. Two trailheads serve the trail system, each with a portable toilet. Parking is very limited and needless to say there are no lifeguards making the trek out to this secluded beach.

    About
Indiana Dunes State Park encompasses 2,182 acres of beach, dunes, marshes, swamps, hardwood forests, and white pine groves and is surrounded by National Lakeshore lands. The park's 16.5 miles of trails allow you to explore all these habitats, which shelter diverse wildlife and provide excellent birding. Even on the busiest summer days, if you head away from the public beach house, you'll quickly lose the crowds. Scan the open water for ships, beachcomb, and take in the sweeping backdrop of the dunes. Watch birds on the open water, feeding at the water's edge, or from the small bird observatory in the park’s Nature Center. The park provides camping, picnicking, showers, snack bar, camp store, and a park naturalist. In summer, the park offers a small gift shop and swimming beach with lifeguards. Interpretive naturalist programs are held daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and on weekends the rest of the year. View the schedule at http://www.stateparks.in.gov or call (219) 926-1390 for information.

    About
MT. BALDY IS CLOSED, but all other Indiana Dunes beaches and sand dunes are open. Visitors wanting to see or hike tall sand dunes are encouraged to visit Indiana Dunes State Park and do The 3 Dune Challenge (http://www.indianadunes.com/3dc). To complete The 3 Dune Challenge, a person must hike a special 1.5 mile course at Indiana Dunes State Park, climbing Mount Jackson (elevation 176 feet), Mount Holden (184 feet), and Mount Tom (192 feet). Some parts of the trail feature 40-degree slopes, making each step that much more, well, challenging. In the sandy vertical climbs, it’s common to take two steps forward and slide one step back. The 3 Dune Challenge’s dunes are significantly higher than the 125-foot Mt. Baldy. As for Mt. Baldy, it is just one of several Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore sites, and the other sites remain open, including West Beach, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Porter Beach, Kemil Road Beach, Dunbar Access Point, Lake View Picnic Area and Central Avenue Beach. Explore this website or call Indiana Dunes Tourism at (800) 283-8687 for more information. Note that Mt. Baldy will remain closed until further notice while scientists investigate unexplained holes that have opened up on its surface. Mt. Baldy is the only site where such issues have been reported.

Campers will be asked to come up with their own unique species and provide all the essential information for that species. They will then spend time creating a "shoe box" habitat for their new species.

  • | 8:00am - 3:00pm | Kids, Summer fun, summer camps, wildlife, environment, education

  • | 11:00am - 12:00pm | Arts and Entertainment, Curtis R. Monday, Radio Show, State Farm Agent, Schererville, Finances
    - “Monday Morning Perspective” on Rejoice 102.3 FM, seeks to advance the conversation of money, business, politics and relationships from a decidedly Christian point of view. This show is presented by Curtis R. Monday and is broadcast every Monday from 11am to 12pm.

    More About Curtis R. Monday:
Entrepreneur, leader, motivator, radio personality and style icon all describe businessman Curtis R. Monday. Monday has a passion and uncommon knack for inspiring young people to “get their financial houses in order.” He has leveraged his successful State Farm Insurance Agencies in Hazel Crest, Illinois and Schererville, Indiana to make millions and create a platform for economic empowerment within the African American community. His story is unique and compelling: From humble beginnings, Curtis became an undeniable success and modern-day pied piper for all things financial. He translates media impressions of ostentatious, faux success into practical pathways and tools that empower young adults to pursue true financial freedom.

  • | 6:00pm - | Sports and Recreation, NWI, Northwest Indiana, Things to do, Nature, Hikes, Fun
    - Walk the Park Together at Buckley Homestead on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 6 p.m. April through August. It’s free and fun. Meet at the Visitor Center parking lot or join the group en route as they travel to the 1910 farm and around the historic site (route may vary throughout the season for variety)

Boost your mind; stay healthy; and connect with friends and neighbors. Join park manager Becky Crabb for a walk in the park. “We will start slowly for a short time (10 minutes) and build speed and distance over the spring and summer weeks,” Crabb explains. You may also walk at your own pace. Having walking buddies has shown that not only do people tend to stick to walking, but they also enjoy the experience more. The goal is to increase health while enjoying the beauty and ambiance of the living history farm.

    - SOUTH SHORE CIVIL WAR MEMORIAL TRAIL (self-guided tours)
    (Various Locations throughout Northwest Indiana)
This trail is a collection of the last known resting places, monuments and architectural icons related to the brave men and women of Lake and Porter counties who sacrificed during this most pivotal era in history. Indiana contributed more than 200,000 Union troops to the Civil War effort between 1861 and 1865, and hundreds of those veterans are buried in the cemeteries of Northwest Indiana along the South Shore of Lake Michigan. The South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail serves as a guide for visitors who want to see and pay respect to the veterans' historic burial grounds and learn the stories of humanity behind the Calumet Region men in blue.

  • | 8:00am - 3:00pm | Kids, Summer fun, summer camps, wildlife, environment, education
