    - The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Our Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families. The Task Force represents a Judeo-Christian expression of the national observance, based on our understanding that this country was birthed in prayer and in reverence for the God of the Bible.

If you are the type that will WALK MILES TO GET TO A SECLUDED BEACH, this is your spot. On your way to the beach you will walk through the remnant of the once-widespread wetland system called Cowles Bog. The bog encompasses a marsh surrounding a small fen, where a stand of tamaracks and white pines grows on a floating mat of peat moss. Starting near the guardhouse in the northeastern part of the site, a boardwalk trail passes marshes and ponds that host horned grebes, black-crowned night herons, buffleheads, and a myriad of other water birds. You can hike right out to the beach and back on 4.5 miles of interconnecting loop trails. Two trailheads serve the trail system, each with a portable toilet. Parking is very limited and needless to say there are no lifeguards making the trek out to this secluded beach.

Indiana Dunes State Park encompasses 2,182 acres of beach, dunes, marshes, swamps, hardwood forests, and white pine groves and is surrounded by National Lakeshore lands. The park's 16.5 miles of trails allow you to explore all these habitats, which shelter diverse wildlife and provide excellent birding. Even on the busiest summer days, if you head away from the public beach house, you'll quickly lose the crowds. Scan the open water for ships, beachcomb, and take in the sweeping backdrop of the dunes. Watch birds on the open water, feeding at the water's edge, or from the small bird observatory in the park’s Nature Center. The park provides camping, picnicking, showers, snack bar, camp store, and a park naturalist. In summer, the park offers a small gift shop and swimming beach with lifeguards. Interpretive naturalist programs are held daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and on weekends the rest of the year. MT. BALDY IS CLOSED, but all other Indiana Dunes beaches and sand dunes are open. Visitors wanting to see or hike tall sand dunes are encouraged to visit Indiana Dunes State Park and do The 3 Dune Challenge (http://www.indianadunes.com/3dc). To complete The 3 Dune Challenge, a person must hike a special 1.5 mile course at Indiana Dunes State Park, climbing Mount Jackson (elevation 176 feet), Mount Holden (184 feet), and Mount Tom (192 feet). Some parts of the trail feature 40-degree slopes, making each step that much more, well, challenging. In the sandy vertical climbs, it’s common to take two steps forward and slide one step back. The 3 Dune Challenge’s dunes are significantly higher than the 125-foot Mt. Baldy. As for Mt. Baldy, it is just one of several Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore sites, and the other sites remain open, including West Beach, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Porter Beach, Kemil Road Beach, Dunbar Access Point, Lake View Picnic Area and Central Avenue Beach. Explore this website or call Indiana Dunes Tourism at (800) 283-8687 for more information. Note that Mt. Baldy will remain closed until further notice while scientists investigate unexplained holes that have opened up on its surface. Mt. Baldy is the only site where such issues have been reported.

A bath house nestled among dunes and a wide sandy beach makes this a popular spot for enjoying Lake Michigan. From the beach, hike the Dune Succession Trail that includes a boardwalk and 250 stairs to a spectacular overlook of the lake with Chicago on the horizon. Covered picnic shelters and grills offer a great spot to relax over a meal after a day’s worth of activities. Lifeguards available from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

    - Turkey Creek Golf Course offers online tee time reservations at http://turkeycreekgolf.com. Reservations are required on weekend and holiday mornings. Players still have the option to call 219-980-5170.

Turkey Creek is a challenging 18 hole, 6,100 yard course featuring hilly, tree-lined fairways with slightly sloping greens conveniently located in the middle of Merrillville. Water, in the form of Turkey Creek, comes into play on 12 of the 18 holes when playing from the white tees. Playing from the forward ones takes water out of play on six of those holes. It remains a challenging course, but it permits people who don’t drive as far to play a different strategy. Also featured are watered fairways, putting green, pro shop, full-service bar, and snack bar.

Turkey Creek Golf Course and Banquet on the Green is located at 6400 Harrison Street in Merrillville, IN 46410. Exit I-65 west at 61st Avenue to Harrison Street, then south for ¼ mile.

    - WIN A FREE TETRABRAZIL SOCCER CAMP hosted by the DUNELAND SOCCER CLUB

DUNELAND SOCCER CLUB is excited to invite you to its TETRABRAZIL Soccer Camp in 2016. After the huge success of last years camp, DSC is excited to host this specialized soccer camp again at our very own Dogwood Park. Last year campers were offered a unique soccer program which included technical development to challenge and raise their game to new heights. This year, our goal is to solidify those skills and techniques introduced in 2015 and introduce our players to even more techniques in 2016. We value the balance of hard work on the soccer field and fun off the soccer field. We, once again, will have MANY MANY fun events planned for campers throughout the week.

Anyone who registers by May 27, 2016 will be entered into a contest to win ONE FREE CAMP REGISTRATION along with receiving an additional Dri-Fit TetraBrazil Jersey. You MUST register by May 27, 2016 to be entered to win. Please do not miss the deadline—register today!!
