    - St. Valentine's Day celebrates the feasts of two Christian martyrs of this name. One, a priest and physician, was beaten and beheaded on the Flaminan Way at Rome, Italy, Feb 14, AD 269, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Another Valentine, the bishop of Terni, is said to have been beheaded, also on the Flaminian Way at Rome, Feb 14 (possibly in a later year). Both history and legend are vague and contradictory about details of the Valentines, and some say that Feb 14 was selected for the celebration of Christian martyrs as a diversion from the ancient pagan observance of Lupercalia. An old legend has it that birds choose their mates on Valentine's Day. Now it is one of the most widely observed unofficial holidays. It is an occasion for the exchange of gifts (usually books, flowers, or sweets) and greeting cards with affectionate or humorous messages.

  • | 6:30pm - 8:30pm | Community and Civic Groups, Clubs
    - The Clarkston Rotary club was founded in 1940. The Rotary club is proud to call attention to all it's done. In its 70 year history the club has participated in the efforts to eradicate polio worldwide, co-sponsored a Rotary club in Kiev, provided eye glasses to needy people in Grenada and Peru, brought clean water to Nigeria and Haiti, sent packages to servicemen, and sponsored youth exchange students who wish to spend a year abroad. Locally the club decorates downtown for the holidays, provides a barbecue for the families of students at SCAMP, awards scholarships at both high schools, provides shoes and boots for area children, sponsored a water feature at the spray park. Many trees and scoreboards stand as reminders of projects carried out by the Clarkston Rotary club.

  • | NATL - National Holidays
    - President's Day observes the birthdays of George Washington (Feb 22nd) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12). With the adoption of the Monday Holiday Law (which moved the observance of George Washington's birthday from Feb 22 to the third Monday in February), some of the specific significance of the event was lost and added impetus was given to the popular description of that holiday as President's Day as a day to honor all former presidents of the US, though the federal holiday is still Washington's Birthday. Annually, the third Monday in February.

    - New Members are ALWAYS welcome!

Clarkston Community Women's Club was formed in 1954. Janet Rose and Phyllis Stackable created a committee to develop a community library. Books were collected and stored in the small white building by the former Independence Township Hall.

This grass-roots venture was sustained by a myriad of fundraisers such as teas, card parties, fashion shows, "Birthday Calendar" sales, plus generous donations of time and money from people who recognized the value of a community library because early millage efforts to operate the library were unsuccessful.

In 1965 the Women's Club transferred the library to the authority of Independence Township.

The Women's Club continued their support and launched a community-wide effort toward the building of a 4000 square foot library at the current Clarkston Road location. This building was dedicated on April 12, 1969.

Today, the Clarkston Community Womens Club (CCWC) continues to provide charitable functions in the city of Clarkston. In addition to supporting Library programs, we support Lighthouse, the Rotary shoes for kids program, Concerts in the Park, Youth Assistance and scholarships for Clarkston High School female students.
