    - One of the most venerated saints of both Eastern and Western Christian churches, of whose life little is known. Except for the fact that he was a Bishop of Myra (now Turkey) in the fourth century, and that from early times he was noted for his charity. • - On December 7, 1941 at 7:55AM (local time), "a date that will live in infamy," nearly 200 Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, long considered the US "Gibraltar of the Pacific." The raid, which lasted little more than one hour, left nearly 3,000 dead. Almost the entire US Pacific Fleet was at anchor there, and few ships escaped damage. Several were sunk or disabled, while 200 US aircraft on the ground were destroyed. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought about immediate US entry into WWII, a declaration of war being requested by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and approved by Congress December 8, 1941.

  • | 4:00pm - 6:00pm | Arts and Entertainment, Architecture Art Education
    - Imagine what the new downtown district in Cuyahoga Falls could look like through the fresh eyes of architecture students from the Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design. That has been the challenge of 14 fourth-year students, under the guidance of Professor Charles Harker, who have been participating in a semester-long program called RE-VISION CUYAHOGA FALLS. Their work proposes architectural responses to the Cuyahoga Falls Master Plan for the transformation of Front St.

The Master Plan, which calls for reopening Front St. to traffic lanes through the several-block corridor, is now in its final design stage. The students’ role has been to breathe vitality and imaginative design ideas into two existing structures as well as to propose new construction in the developing area on Front Street south of Broad Boulevard.
Working with Cuyahoga Valley Art Center (CVAC) some of the students have focused their attention on the art center building and others have chosen to direct their efforts to re-purposing the historic Falls Theater building. At CVAC they have explored a variety of ways to fashion bright, inspirational, fully accessible interior spaces for those who want to try their hand at classes as well as for those attending gallery showings. At the theatre, plans call for a restaurant/brewery, housing and retail in an imaginative atmosphere that blends historic detail with modern tastes.

“It was a pleasure to watch the creative process of each of these students, “said Danielle Dieterich, CVAC director. “Their ideas are an inspiring outlook of what could be in Cuyahoga Falls. I am excited to see the community’s reactions to their architectural plans.”

To provide an opportunity for community reaction, CVAC has planned a reception from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, December 10 at the center at 2131 Front Street in Cuyahoga Falls. There will be an exhibition of large, graphic depictions of the work and the students will be there to answer questions and discuss their process. The reception is free and open to the public.
