  • The Concordia Choir in Concert | 7:30pm - | Arts and Entertainment, Concordia, Concert
Posted by Town Planner in Middle Tennessee

The Concordia Choir in Concert - The Concordia Choir of Moorhead, Minnesota will be performing in First Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. This is a free concert sponsored by the Nashville Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and First Presbyterian Church. Seating is limited.

The 75-voice Concordia Choir of Moorhead, Minnesota, continues to affirm its reputation as one of America’s finest a cappella choirs. Since 1920, the Choir has performed in nearly every major hall including Carnegie Hall and Kennedy Center as well as numerous international tours.

One highlight of the 2015 National Tour concert program includes the stunning work Curse Upon Iron by Veljo Tormis. Sung in Estonian, this intriguing piece combines folk melodies and contemporary choral techniques to connect the ancient past with the present as it warns of the dangers of war.

The Concordia Choir is featured in the Emmy-winning Concordia Christmas Concerts, which are nationally broadcast on public television. The choir’s recordings are distributed internationally and through iTunes, making it one of the top-selling choirs in the country.

A February 2010 performance and recording session with the Grammy Award-winning King’s Singers and multiple performances on Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion radio show highlight the Choir’s world-class quality.

Michael Smith, senior lecturer and conductor at Concordia from 2006-2012, has returned to campus as guest conductor of The Concordia Choir during René Clausen’s creative leave.

Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College, Master of Arts in music degree from the University of Northern Colorado, and did doctoral work in Music Education from the University of Minnesota. For twenty-five years Smith was choral director at Brainerd High School where his choirs maintained a tradition of excellence performing for state and regional MENC and ACDA conventions.

In 1989, Smith was named Brainerd Teacher of the Year, and was one of nine finalists for Minnesota Teacher of the Year. In 2005, the National Federation of State High School Associations named him Outstanding Music Educator of the Year.

This year’s 2015 national tour of the Southeast spans 15 days and includes locations between Pompano Beach, Florida and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Easter Monday - Dyngus Day -
Dyngus Day, also spelled Dingus Day, is a fun Polish Holiday.  It is
very popular in Poland, and in Polish communities across America. After the
long Lenten holiday, Dyngus Day is a day of fun. And, perhaps a little romantic
fun. It is always celebrated on the Monday after Easter.

    Dyngus Day Tradition:

There are all sort of ways for boys to meet girls. But, this one takes the
    cake.

Guys, on this day you get to wet the ladies down. Sprinkling or drenching
with water is your goal. Chase after the ladies with squirt guns, buckets,
or other containers of water. The more bold and gallant boys, may choose
to use cologne. Hitting (gently, please) the ladies on the legs with switches
or pussy willows is also common.

Yes ladies, you can strike back. Ladies , you get your revenge on Tuesday,
when tradition has it that you throw dishes or crockery back at the boys.
It has become increasingly popular for the ladies to get their revenge on
Monday, tossing water back at the boys.

Note: Dyngus Day is also called Wet Easter Monday. Hmmmmm, I wonder
    why!?

    Origin of Dyngus Day:

When exploring the roots of Dyngus Day, Historians point to the baptism of
Polish Prince Mieszko I in 966 A.D. Baptism with water signifies cleansing,
    fertility, and purification.

Somewhere along the way, the tradition of tossing water on the girls and
hitting them with pussy willows evolved.
