    - St. Valentine's Day celebrates the feasts of two Christian martyrs of this name. One, a priest and physician, was beaten and beheaded on the Flaminan Way at Rome, Italy, Feb 14, AD 269, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Another Valentine, the bishop of Terni, is said to have been beheaded, also on the Flaminian Way at Rome, Feb 14 (possibly in a later year). Both history and legend are vague and contradictory about details of the Valentines, and some say that Feb 14 was selected for the celebration of Christian martyrs as a diversion from the ancient pagan observance of Lupercalia. An old legend has it that birds choose their mates on Valentine's Day. Now it is one of the most widely observed unofficial holidays. It is an occasion for the exchange of gifts (usually books, flowers, or sweets) and greeting cards with affectionate or humorous messages.

    - President's Day observes the birthdays of George Washington (Feb 22nd) and Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12). With the adoption of the Monday Holiday Law (which moved the observance of George Washington's birthday from Feb 22 to the third Monday in February), some of the specific significance of the event was lost and added impetus was given to the popular description of that holiday as President's Day as a day to honor all former presidents of the US, though the federal holiday is still Washington's Birthday. Annually, the third Monday in February.

  • | 7:30pm - 9:00pm | Local Events, addiction, recovery
    - “Collegiate Recovery Programs: Supporting Second Chances” will be presented on Tuesday February 16, 2016, from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm; by Mary Jo Desprez, MA; Director, Wolverine Wellness, University Health Service, University of Michigan; and Matthew Statman, LMSW, CAADC; University of Michigan Collegiate Recovery Program Manager. The transition to a college environment can pose significant risk to a recovering student and to students at risk for alcohol/other drug problems. Many colleges and universities, including the University of Michigan, have developed programs to help recovering students maintain their recovery, excel academically and have a normative college experience apart from the culture of alcohol and other drug use. Research demonstrates exceptionally high rates of academic success and sustained recovery among students who participate in Collegiate Recovery Programs. This presentation will provide an overview of the national and local efforts to build recovery support programs on college campuses, discuss support that is provided to recovering students by collegiate recovery programs, and provide information about what parents and students can look for as they explore their options for pursuing a degree of higher education. This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual education series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about chemical dependency, recovery, family and related issues; and to dispel the myths, misinformation, secrecy, shame and stigma that prevent chemically dependent individuals and their families from getting help and getting well. The Education Series is designed to help people with alcoholism or other drug addictions to achieve, maintain and strengthen their recovery; assist family members and friends to understand and support recovery in people they care about as well as maintain their own health and well-being; aid professionals and students in various disciplines to work effectively with people with addictions and their families and support their recovery process; and contribute to a community culture supportive of recovery. All programs are free and open to anyone interested. Registration is not required. 1.5 hours of free C.E. approved by NAADAC (National Association for Addiction Professionals) and MCBAP (Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals) is offered for each program. A certificate to document attendance is provided on request. The Education Series is organized by Dawn Farm, a non-profit community of programs providing a continuum of chemical dependency services.

  • | 7:30pm - 9:00pm | Local Events, addiction, recovery
    - “Suicide Prevention and Addiction” will be presented on Tuesday February 23, 2016, from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm; by Raymond Dalton, MA, CAADC; Coordinator, Dawn Farm Outpatient Services. The prevalence of suicide attempts and suicide completion among people with alcohol/other drug addiction is significantly higher than in the general population, and the period of early recovery from addiction is especially high risk. Family, friends and professionals are often strategically positioned to recognize potential suicidal thinking and intervene to help. Learning about the signs of suicidal thinking and how to intervene when a person may be contemplating suicide can reduce the barriers to suicidal individuals obtaining help and potentially prevent suicide deaths. This program will raise awareness of the prevalence of suicide among people with addiction, describe signs of suicidal thinking, and discuss effective ways to offer support and help to people who may be contemplating suicide.
