To add a twist of fun to our 2015 season, we're going to get the audience involved! We all remember the days gone by of classroom spelling bees.... Now we present a spelling bee like no other! Welcome to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!

Set in the geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School, six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups. Ranging in spelling everything from "cow" to "weltanschauung" this fun, audience interactive show will provide endless laughs well beyond the evening here at the Opera House.

    - “Extra, Extra, Extra” Get your Deep River Register hot off the presses at each home game on sale for only one penny. Chock-full of Grinder details, little known facts, and Deep River General Store coupon it is money well spent.

Then hear the umpire declare, “striker to the plate,” and enjoy the match. It is unlike most games of base ball, as it’s limited to the original 37 rules of 1858. The striker is out if the ball is caught on the fly or on one bound, fair or foul. There are no called balls and strikes, and the Rover (shortstop) may play anywhere on the field. Enjoy America’s game as it should be played . . . by gentlemen. Pack up the lawn chairs or blankets for seating and bring the entire family.

Following each home game children line up to take their turn at bat and run the base paths while Grinders play the field. One little guy told the players, “When I grow up I want to be a Grinder.” Isn’t that what base ball is all about? Don’t miss this year’s Deep River Grinders games. They are a treat for young and not-so-young alike.

Free home games are played at 2 p.m. on Grinder Field across the river from Wood’s Historic Grist Mill at Deep River County Park. Purchase an ice cold bottle of sarsaparilla, relax, and shout “Huzzah!” for good plays from both teams. Updates will be posted at LakeCountyParks.com

Originally founded in 1990 as the North Coast Cultural Association and was located in the former St. Patrick's Catholic Church until a fire burned the church down in 1998. Our second location, now the Fourth Street Theater, opened its doors in the fall of 1999. Our first performance was a revival of Footlight Players production of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, abridged” in 2000. We then produced our first show in the spring of 2001: "The Good War." In the summer of 2002, we joined the Northwest Indiana Excellence in Theatre Foundation, or NIETF, from whom we have since received over 120 nominations and 40 awards for excellence in all aspects of theatrical production.

    - Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is opening its East Property to the public on August 4. The East Property is just over 90 acres and encompasses the new Pheasant and Woodcock Trails. The trails are named for the Woodcock and Pheasant preserves they surround.

Taltree will mark the opening of the property on August 4, with a Valpo Chamber ribbon cutting at 4:30pm. Guests for the ribbon cutting will have access to the property beginning at 4:00pm. The ribbon cutting will feature light refreshments and short remarks from Taltree’s Interim Executive Director, Stephanie Blackstock. The East Property will be open for walking, and tours will be available as resources allow.

On August 8 from 8am to 7pm, admission will be 50% off all day to celebrate the East Property’s opening. Also, a special children’s map will debut, featuring the East Property.

“Taltree is so fortunate to have this beautiful piece of property, and we’re so glad to be able to share it with the public,” said Blackstock.
