  • Native Plants in Formal Landscape topic of March Wild Ones Meeting -Gibson Woods - Guest speaker at the Saturday, March 7 Wild Ones meeting is Mark O’Brien, Nursery Operations Manager, Principal Cardno JFNew who will discuss “Native Plants in a Formal Landscape” in a colorful presentation on Midwestern native grasses and wildflowers. Mr. O’Brien has been with Cardno JFNew for 15 years and leads Cardno’s native plant nursery in Walkerton IN. He is President of the Walkerton Parks Foundation and on the board of directors of the Indiana Nursery and Landscape Association.

Gibson Woods Wild Ones is a local chapter of Wild Ones, Native Plants, Natural Landscapes. Meetings are held at 10 a.m. at Gibson Woods Nature Preserve.

Through chapter activities and guest speakers meeting attendees have learned the many aspects of incorporating native plants into their own landscaping. Those who grow native plants have not only brought the beauty of native wildflowers and grasses to their yards, but they have provided a more inviting habitat for butterflies and songbirds.

Volunteers help out at the Oak Ridge Prairie native plant nursery and greenhouse growing plants for natural area restoration projects, in addition to helping maintain the native plant gardens at Gibson Woods. Proceeds from the annual spring native plant sale, hosted by the group, help fund resources, projects and programs for Lake County Parks. Star Gazing@ Conway Observatory at Buckley Homestead -See Available Dates Listed - Expand Your Universe at Conway Observatory

The volunteers of the Calumet Astronomical Society invite the public to explore the wonders of the universe when they present their popular family-friendly free public programs. Facilities, including access to the big telescope, are wheelchair accessible. Volunteers guide visitors in the use of telescopes and astronomical binoculars as they observe the majesty of the skies. Star charts, club information, and astronomy-related activities are presented.

Please park in the designated visitor parking area. Because observing is conducted in a “lights-out” environment, parents are requested to keep their children under close supervision. Do not use standard flashlights in the observing area. Exposure to white light, even briefly, will seriously impair night vision making observing difficult. Red-filtered flashlights can provide illumination without affecting night vision. You can make a red light by cutting off the end a red balloon and putting it over a standard flashlight.

Of Special Note: Observing with telescopes is contingent upon clear weather. Cloudy or inclement weather conditions may cause programs to be cancelled without advance notification. It is suggested that you call the CAS InfoLine, 1-773-639-5491, for updated weather conditions before heading to the event. See http://www.casonline.org for more information.

  • Girls on the Run 5th Annual LUNAFEST Film Festival | 6:00pm - 9:30pm | Charity, Fundraiser, Film, Silent Auction, Women
Girls on the Run 5th Annual LUNAFEST Film Festival -
Join Girls on the Run of Northwest Indiana for an amazing night of fun, food, films, and friends, all to support charity. The fifth annual local LUNAFEST® film festival will be held on Thursday, March 12 from 6:00-9:30 p.m. at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster.

The event will feature eight inspirational short films made by and about women. Prior to the film screening at 7:30 p.m., attendees will enjoy wine, beer, and appetizers while perusing a great variety of silent auction items. Auction prizes include a one week stay at a Florida condo, autographed sports memorabilia, jewelry, framed photography, and gift certificates for local restaurants, salons, and recreational activities, among other great items.

Advance sale tickets are $20 and can be purchased through the Girls on the Run of Northwest Indiana website, http://www.gotrofnwi.org. VIP tickets and student tickets are also available in advance. Tickets are $25 at the door.

LUNAFEST is dedicated to promoting awareness about women’s issues, highlighting women filmmakers, and bringing women together in our community. The nine international, award-winning short films showcase women as leaders in our society. This year’s films cover topics such as a group of women challenging gender social norms as an all-female mariachi band, a young Muslim American girl who wants to join her new high school’s cheerleading squad, and the life of octogenarian queen of Cornish punk Viva Hamnell.

The proceeds will benefit charities dedicated to the health and happiness of girls and women: Girls on the Run of Northwest Indiana and the Breast Cancer Fund. Girls on the Run provides a life-changing youth development program to over 1,500 third through eighth grade girls across Northwest Indiana each year. The Breast Cancer Fund is an organization dedicated to eliminating the environmental causes of the disease.

Bozovich Wellness Center is the presenting sponsor of this year’s event. Tiffany Bozovich, DC, CKTP, owner, discusses why she supports the event: “Girls on the Run was introduced to me a few years ago, and I've been intrigued ever since. There is no other organization out there that teaches young girls confidence, self-respect, and personal value like they do. I choose to sponsor LUNAFEST because after attending last year, I left feeling empowered and so proud to be a woman.”

LUNAFEST was created by LUNA®, The Whole Nutrition Bar for Women®. The national festival has raised over $656,000 for the Breast Cancer Fund and over $1,250,000 for other women’s non-profit organizations.

Please visit http://www.gotrofnwi.org/lunafest for more information.
