  • | 11:00am - 12:00pm | Arts and Entertainment, Curtis R. Monday, Radio Show, State Farm Agent, Schererville, Finances
    - “Monday Morning Perspective” on Rejoice 102.3 FM, seeks to advance the conversation of money, business, politics and relationships from a decidedly Christian point of view. This show is presented by Curtis R. Monday and is broadcast every Monday from 11am to 12pm.

    More About Curtis R. Monday:
Entrepreneur, leader, motivator, radio personality and style icon all describe businessman Curtis R. Monday. Monday has a passion and uncommon knack for inspiring young people to “get their financial houses in order.” He has leveraged his successful State Farm Insurance Agencies in Hazel Crest, Illinois and Schererville, Indiana to make millions and create a platform for economic empowerment within the African American community. His story is unique and compelling: From humble beginnings, Curtis became an undeniable success and modern-day pied piper for all things financial. He translates media impressions of ostentatious, faux success into practical pathways and tools that empower young adults to pursue true financial freedom.

    - Taltree Arboretum & Gardens is hosting a Spring Indiana Master Naturalist program. This hands-on learning experience and volunteer service opportunity teaches students about the native landscape and local wildlife of Northwest Indiana. The course includes sessions on botany, zoology, geology, water ecology and wildlife conservation, taught by area experts.

“Anyone can become a master of nature with this all-inclusive series,” said Maddie Grimm, Director of Education at Taltree Arboretum & Gardens. “Beyond learning, students will put their knowledge to work by performing 30 hours of community service to earn their program certificate.”

The 10 week course begins Thursday, March 10th and runs through Thursday, May 12th. Classes are held on Thursday mornings, from 9am-12pm. The course cost is $100, and it is open to adults age 18 and over. Participants should dress for the outdoors, whether rain or shine.

To register, visit http://www.taltree.org/programs/classes/indiana-master-naturalist-program/ for a printable application or call 219-462-0025.

Established in 2000 by LUNA, the makers of the Whole Nutrition Bar for Women, LUNAFEST connects women, their stories and their causes through film. This traveling film festival spotlights the work of a diverse array of talented women filmmakers with intelligent, funny and thought-provoking themes.

Equally important, LUNAFEST can be used as a "fundraiser-in-a-box", helping hosts raise money for nonprofits in their own communities, as well as for our main beneficiary, the Breast Cancer Fund. 100 percent of all net proceeds are donated to charity. Since its inception, LUNAFEST has grown from a single annual event to a coast-to-coast force with more than 175 North American screenings each season. To date, 127 filmmakers have been featured, nearly $2.9 million dollars have been raised and thousands of attendees have come away moved, entertained and inspired.

    - Let's face it: young children are awfully cute, but they can be pretty self-absorbed. As with all skills, learning empathy takes practice—the more, the better.

One of the best ways to get kids thinking beyond themselves is through their relationships with animals. Kids everywhere love pets—both the real and stuffed varieties—and this deep connection often represents the first real opportunity to practice caretaking behaviors that nurture empathy and burgeoning social skills. Pets Unleashed channels this natural affinity for animals into an immersive environment designed to inspire open-ended, empathy-building play.

Little ones will be wide-eyed with wonder when they enter this fantastical pet paradise. Filled with climbable dwellings, caretaking props, wearable animal accessories, movable structures, and "pets" of all types and sizes, this exhibit provides a platform for boundless self-expression and imaginative play.

Kids can brush, feed, bath, bandage, and otherwise care for their "pets." Or they can be a pet and experience life from an animal's perspective. Whatever roles they choose, Pets Unleashed offers a pathway to developing compassion, empathy and respect, for others and themselves.

Pets Unleashed will be open at Chicago Children's Museum through May 1.

    - For newcomers to the theatrical glory that is Chicago Theatre Week created by the League of Chicago Theatres and Choose Chicago, the premise is marvelous. From Feb. 11-21, theater tickets will be priced at $30, $15, or even less all across town. That means those shows at the Goodman, Steppenwolf and Second City--you know, the ones you normally can’t budget all in the same week--are entirely wonderfully affordable.

Last year’s Theatre Week featured 116 theater companies and welcomed nearly 10,000 Chicagoans. And with a range of touring and pre-Broadway shows, new musicals, old favorites and the brand of comedy for which Chicago is famous, you’re guaranteed an incredible array of performances.

    Our family-friendly picks for 2016:

Two shows at Chicago Children’s Theatre are on board, including the mesmerizing, beautiful (and wordless) Snow Angel, which tells the story of two children who discover a magical winter wonderland, as well as Gale LaJoye’s devised play, Snowflake, an impressive and hilarious piece that elevates everyday objects into treasures.

Skippyjon Jones in the Cirque de Ole takes center ring at Emerald City Theatre. Fans of the book series by Judy Schachner will adore this story of circus stunts, self-acceptance and more Chihuahuas than you can wag a tail at.

And for an intro into the world of classic Broadway, we highly recommend Drury Lane’s Bye Bye Birdie. A rock n’ roll mania tale of heartthrob Conrad Birdie, an unexpected draft, and the prize of a “farewell” kiss on the Ed Sullivan Show will more than resonate with any media-happy tweens in your household.

    - Crawpuppies call Northwest Indiana home since the band formed in 1995. Besides being a great cover band, they have 2 critically acclaimed original CD releases from 2004 and 2009. "Peaceful Amnesty", released in 2004, was the band's debut release and "World's Much Bigger" was the long awaited 2009 follow-up to their first album. The band has shared the stage with Blues Traveler, Counting Crows, Everclear, Live, Hanson, Gin Blossoms, Cracker, and Styx to name a few. There's no venue or situation Crawpuppies are strangers in. Crawpuppies are also 1/2 of the Beatles tribute act, Mega Beatles

Their cover song library is vast and diverse. The original songs definitely have a Beatle-influenced sound to them, but still boast an originality that keeps them fresh and new sounding at the same time.

On your way to the beach you will walk through the remnant of the once-widespread wetland system called Cowles Bog. The bog encompasses a marsh surrounding a small fen, where a stand of tamaracks and white pines grows on a floating mat of peat moss. Starting near the guardhouse in the northeastern part of the site, a boardwalk trail passes marshes and ponds that host horned grebes, black-crowned night herons, buffleheads, and a myriad of other water birds. You can hike right out to the beach and back on 4.5 miles of interconnecting loop trails. Two trailheads serve the trail system, each with a portable toilet. Parking is very limited and needless to say there are no lifeguards making the trek out to this secluded beach.

    About
Indiana Dunes State Park encompasses 2,182 acres of beach, dunes, marshes, swamps, hardwood forests, and white pine groves and is surrounded by National Lakeshore lands. The park's 16.5 miles of trails allow you to explore all these habitats, which shelter diverse wildlife and provide excellent birding. Even on the busiest summer days, if you head away from the public beach house, you'll quickly lose the crowds. Scan the open water for ships, beachcomb, and take in the sweeping backdrop of the dunes. Watch birds on the open water, feeding at the water's edge, or from the small bird observatory in the park’s Nature Center. The park provides camping, picnicking, showers, snack bar, camp store, and a park naturalist. In summer, the park offers a small gift shop and swimming beach with lifeguards. Interpretive naturalist programs are held daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and on weekends the rest of the year. View the schedule at http://www.stateparks.in.gov or call (219) 926-1390 for information.

    About
MT. BALDY IS CLOSED, but all other Indiana Dunes beaches and sand dunes are open. Visitors wanting to see or hike tall sand dunes are encouraged to visit Indiana Dunes State Park and do The 3 Dune Challenge (http://www.indianadunes.com/3dc). To complete The 3 Dune Challenge, a person must hike a special 1.5 mile course at Indiana Dunes State Park, climbing Mount Jackson (elevation 176 feet), Mount Holden (184 feet), and Mount Tom (192 feet). Some parts of the trail feature 40-degree slopes, making each step that much more, well, challenging. In the sandy vertical climbs, it’s common to take two steps forward and slide one step back. The 3 Dune Challenge’s dunes are significantly higher than the 125-foot Mt. Baldy. As for Mt. Baldy, it is just one of several Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore sites, and the other sites remain open, including West Beach, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Porter Beach, Kemil Road Beach, Dunbar Access Point, Lake View Picnic Area and Central Avenue Beach. Explore this website or call Indiana Dunes Tourism at (800) 283-8687 for more information. Note that Mt. Baldy will remain closed until further notice while scientists investigate unexplained holes that have opened up on its surface. Mt. Baldy is the only site where such issues have been reported.
