    - NW Indiana borders one of the largest lakes in the world. Would you know what to do if you were caught in a rip current? What would you do if you were too tired to swim to shore? What if your watercraft capsized? Could you recognize the signs of a swimmer in trouble? Learning some simple techniques could greatly increase the chance of survival should an accident on water occur. Join us for an informative presentation and bring a family member or friend you care about. Call 219-844-3188 to register.

The “Great Lakes Water Safety” presentation will teach participants to: understand that drowning is a leading cause of injury and death; recognize the “Signs of Drowning” & how to identify a person in trouble; recognize the dangers of the surf environment keeping personal safety as the primary responsibility; understand dangerous currents; i.e. how, where, and why dangerous currents occur and how to survive them; understand the “Flip, Float, & Follow” dangerous currents survival strategy; understand how a flotation device such as a throw ring, throw rope, surfboard or other objects that float can rescue a person in distress or in a dangerous current; and realize the importance of taking a lifesaving, first aid and CPR training from accredited agency.

Class participants have consisted of the general public, surfers, lifeguards, police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, water rescue team members, dive team members, and the U.S. Coast Guard.

ABOUT THE GLSRP The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, Inc. (GLSRP) is a nonprofit 501c3 corporation that is a chapter of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) that tracks Great Lakes drowning statistics and has taught more than 130 “Great Lakes Water Safety” presentations (http://www.GLSRP.org)

    - During Water Safety Month the Crossroads YMCA’s Griffith, Hammond, Southlake, and Whiting branches offer Safety Around Water, an affordable program designed to engage and educate parents about the importance of water safety skills and provide more of America’s youth access to water safety lessons. The program focuses on reaching underserved communities with a special emphasis on African American and Hispanic communities where risk of drowning among children is highest. Safety Around Water will be held May 23-26 at Hammond, Southlake, and Whiting YMCA pools; Griffith YMCA’s program will be held at Griffith High School.

According to data from the USA Swimming Foundation, 70 percent of African American and 60 percent of Hispanic children cannot swim, compared to just 40 percent of Caucasian children. While fatal drowning is a concern for all children – it’s the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages one to 14 years old – African American children ages 5 to 14 are three times more likely to drown than their white counterparts.
Through Safety Around Water, parents and caregivers will be encouraged to help their children learn fundamental water safety and swimming skills. During the eight-day course, children will learn how to respond if they find themselves in unexpected water situations -- from how to reach the water’s surface if they submerge to safely reaching a pool’s edge or exiting any body of water.

This 8-session course, taught by a certified instructor, teaches children two sets of skills that will reduce the risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water. A typical session includes:
•Exercises to help children adjust to being in water
•Instruction in “Jump, Push, Turn, Grab” and “Swim, Float, Swim,” two skill sets children can use if they unexpectedly find themselves in the water
•An activity that teaches children about specific safety topics such as pool rules and boating safety
•A fun game to encourage comfort and activity around water

Safety Around Water is open to anyone in the community who wants their children to learn how to be safe in and around water. The program is available to participants for $10 and will be held from May 23-26, 2016 from 4-6:00pm each day. Each lesson includes a handout for parents and caregivers with additional water safety tips.

Register April 21 through May 4 at your local Crossroads Y branch.

    - The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. Our Task Force is a privately funded organization whose purpose is to encourage participation on the National Day of Prayer. It exists to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, to create appropriate materials, and to mobilize the Christian community to intercede for America’s leaders and its families. If you are the type that will WALK MILES TO GET TO A SECLUDED BEACH, this is your spot. On your way to the beach you will walk through the remnant of the once-widespread wetland system called Cowles Bog. The bog encompasses a marsh surrounding a small fen, where a stand of tamaracks and white pines grows on a floating mat of peat moss. Starting near the guardhouse in the northeastern part of the site, a boardwalk trail passes marshes and ponds that host horned grebes, black-crowned night herons, buffleheads, and a myriad of other water birds. You can hike right out to the beach and back on 4.5 miles of interconnecting loop trails. Two trailheads serve the trail system, each with a portable toilet. Parking is very limited and needless to say there are no lifeguards making the trek out to this secluded beach.

Indiana Dunes State Park encompasses 2,182 acres of beach, dunes, marshes, swamps, hardwood forests, and white pine groves and is surrounded by National Lakeshore lands. The park's 16.5 miles of trails allow you to explore all these habitats, which shelter diverse wildlife and provide excellent birding. Even on the busiest summer days, if you head away from the public beach house, you'll quickly lose the crowds. Scan the open water for ships, beachcomb, and take in the sweeping backdrop of the dunes. Watch birds on the open water, feeding at the water's edge, or from the small bird observatory in the park’s Nature Center. The park provides camping, picnicking, showers, snack bar, camp store, and a park naturalist. In summer, the park offers a small gift shop and swimming beach with lifeguards. Interpretive naturalist programs are held daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and on weekends the rest of the year. View the schedule at http://www.stateparks.in.gov or call (219) 926-1390 for information.

MT. BALDY IS CLOSED, but all other Indiana Dunes beaches and sand dunes are open. Visitors wanting to see or hike tall sand dunes are encouraged to visit Indiana Dunes State Park and do The 3 Dune Challenge (http://www.indianadunes.com/3dc). To complete The 3 Dune Challenge, a person must hike a special 1.5 mile course at Indiana Dunes State Park, climbing Mount Jackson (elevation 176 feet), Mount Holden (184 feet), and Mount Tom (192 feet). Some parts of the trail feature 40-degree slopes, making each step that much more, well, challenging. In the sandy vertical climbs, it’s common to take two steps forward and slide one step back. The 3 Dune Challenge’s dunes are significantly higher than the 125-foot Mt. Baldy. As for Mt. Baldy, it is just one of several Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore sites, and the other sites remain open, including West Beach, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Porter Beach, Kemil Road Beach, Dunbar Access Point, Lake View Picnic Area and Central Avenue Beach. Explore this website or call Indiana Dunes Tourism at (800) 283-8687 for more information. Note that Mt. Baldy will remain closed until further notice while scientists investigate unexplained holes that have opened up on its surface. Mt. Baldy is the only site where such issues have been reported.

Turkey Creek is a challenging 18 hole, 6,100 yard course featuring hilly, tree-lined fairways with slightly sloping greens conveniently located in the middle of Merrillville. Water, in the form of Turkey Creek, comes into play on 12 of the 18 holes when playing from the white tees. Playing from the forward ones takes water out of play on six of those holes. It remains a challenging course, but it permits people who don’t drive as far to play a different strategy. Also featured are watered fairways, putting green, pro shop, full-service bar, and snack bar.

Turkey Creek Golf Course and Banquet on the Green is located at 6400 Harrison Street in Merrillville, IN 46410. Exit I-65 west at 61st Avenue to Harrison Street, then south for ¼ mile.
