    TRUE NORTH TRAINING STABLES
927 North 150 West, Chesterton, IN
    (219) 728-7490
True North provides a safe environment where at risk youth and their families come for training in life skills and spiritual awareness in an equine setting. This includes, but is not limited to, children who struggle with depression, autism, foster/adopted, ADD, ADHD, self-harm, bullied, addiction, sexual abuse, incarcerated parents, eating disorders, truancy, and other similar society issues. We instruct our students through an eight-week program covering the following character qualities: relationship building; teamwork and leadership; respect; patience, perseverance and strength; focus; communication; critical thinking, decision making, discernment, and conflict resolution; and trust. Byproducts of these character qualities are values such as honesty, gaining control, confidence, empathy, compassion, love, gratitude, forgiveness, grace, humility, contentment and care. Individual lessons plans are uniquely designed based on the needs of each young person. Each lesson is planned to connect the horse and student. It is our desire to bring hope to those in need.

If you are the type that will WALK MILES TO GET TO A SECLUDED BEACH, this is your spot. On your way to the beach you will walk through the remnant of the once-widespread wetland system called Cowles Bog. The bog encompasses a marsh surrounding a small fen, where a stand of tamaracks and white pines grows on a floating mat of peat moss. Starting near the guardhouse in the northeastern part of the site, a boardwalk trail passes marshes and ponds that host horned grebes, black-crowned night herons, buffleheads, and a myriad of other water birds. You can hike right out to the beach and back on 4.5 miles of interconnecting loop trails. Two trailheads serve the trail system, each with a portable toilet. Parking is very limited and needless to say there are no lifeguards making the trek out to this secluded beach.

The park's 16.5 miles of trails allow you to explore all these habitats, which shelter diverse wildlife and provide excellent birding. Even on the busiest summer days, if you head away from the public beach house, you'll quickly lose the crowds. Scan the open water for ships, beachcomb, and take in the sweeping backdrop of the dunes. Watch birds on the open water, feeding at the water's edge, or from the small bird observatory in the park’s Nature Center. The park provides camping, picnicking, showers, snack bar, camp store, and a park naturalist. In summer, the park offers a small gift shop and swimming beach with lifeguards. Interpretive naturalist programs are held daily between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and on weekends the rest of the year. MT. BALDY IS CLOSED, but all other Indiana Dunes beaches and sand dunes are open. Visitors wanting to see or hike tall sand dunes are encouraged to visit Indiana Dunes State Park and do The 3 Dune Challenge (http://www.indianadunes.com/3dc). To complete The 3 Dune Challenge, a person must hike a special 1.5 mile course at Indiana Dunes State Park, climbing Mount Jackson (elevation 176 feet), Mount Holden (184 feet), and Mount Tom (192 feet). Some parts of the trail feature 40-degree slopes, making each step that much more, well, challenging. In the sandy vertical climbs, it’s common to take two steps forward and slide one step back. The 3 Dune Challenge’s dunes are significantly higher than the 125-foot Mt. Baldy. As for Mt. Baldy, it is just one of several Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore sites, and the other sites remain open, including West Beach, Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, Porter Beach, Kemil Road Beach, Dunbar Access Point, Lake View Picnic Area and Central Avenue Beach. Explore this website or call Indiana Dunes Tourism at (800) 283-8687 for more information. Note that Mt. Baldy will remain closed until further notice while scientists investigate unexplained holes that have opened up on its surface. Mt. Baldy is the only site where such issues have been reported.

Weekend programs will focus on relaxing in the outdoors, beach glass jewelry making, a camping recipe tasting and exchange, example glamping sites, free beach yoga, and other activities.

New in 2016 is a vintage camper rally featuring vintage campers from around the country. Visitors will have a chance to peak inside these over the course of the weekend. Special programming will also be available for those vintage camping in the park.

The weekend coincides with International Glamping Weekend, a special weekend that celebrates luxury camping, and the ability to experience the great outdoors with many of the advanced amenities we have come to depend on in our daily lives. The tentative schedule is as follows:

    Friday, June 3
6:30pm Sunset Beach Yoga! Every Thursday and Friday this summer, Bleu Lotus Yoga offers an all levels yoga class on the beautiful dunes beach. Cost is $10 per session. For more information or to register, visit http://www.bleulotusyoga.com or call 299-YOGA. Classes are cancelled in inclement weather.

7pm A Glampfire S’mores Gathering! Glampers, campers, and wannabees, head over to the Campground Shelter (by site 116) to enjoy an evening of glamping festivities. We’ll partake in some glamping trivia (prizes included) and finish off with a s’mores bar for everyone to sample! Want to borrow some glamping bling? Visit to also help deck your site out. Great family fun!

    Saturday June 4
0am Good Morning Glampers! Kick off our Glamping Weekend with guest naturalist Jessica on the Nature Center front lawn. Check out the trends in glamping, or glamorous camping. We’ll also have a make-it, take-it glamping gift for you.

12pm Vintage Camper Swap Meet! Bring your vintage or older camp supplies for an informal swap (buy, sell or trade) your vintage camper parts, tires, cookware, anything retro and vintage. Meet in the Campground Shelter.

2pm Vintage Camper Open House. Check out the cool array of vintage campers and glampers in the campground from 2pm-4pm. Look for the campers with the yellow signs in the middle of the campground.

4pm Wild Edibles Walk. Meet the Wilson Shelter for a special hour walk exploring some delicious dune delicacies found below your feet. We’ll traverse an easy part of Trail 2 and be back before 5pm. Join us!

6pm Vintage and Glamper Pot Luck Pitch-in! Glampers and glamper wannabees, head over to the Campground Shelter (by site 116) for a good stuffing of food! We’ll also give out more prizes and take a group photo.

9am Morning Beach Yoga! Stretch your legs at the beach this fine glamping weekend! Join guest instructors from Bleu Lotus Yoga will help lead the way during this free session in front of the beach pavilion. In case of inclement weather, the session will be cancelled.

10:30am Glampfire Cooking Demos. Meet at the Nature Center’s outdoor program area to see, sniff, and sample what the naturalists are cooking over the glampfire this morning! Feel free to bring a copy of your favorite camping recipe to share with fellow campers.

  • | 9:00pm - 11:30pm | Local Events, NWI, Northwest Indiana, Astronomy, Fun, Family, Things to do
    - On Saturday, June 4 from 9 to 11:30 p.m. join volunteers of the Calumet Astronomical Society in viewing Jupiter and its moons. Would you be surprised to learn that Jupiter has 50 named moons as well as additional provisional ones? The four largest are called the Galilean satellites. Of these, Ganymede is not only Jupiter’s largest, but it’s the largest moon in the solar system; even larger than the planet Mercury. CAS members remind visitors that they don’t have to know anything about astronomy to enjoy these family-friendly free public programs. They encourage the public to explore the wonders of the universe with them.

Facilities, including access to the big telescope, are wheelchair accessible. Volunteers guide visitors in the use of telescopes and astronomical binoculars as they observe the majesty of the skies. Star charts, club information, and astronomy-related activities are presented.

Please park in the designated visitor parking area. Because observing is conducted in a “lights-out” environment, parents are requested to keep their children under close supervision. Do not use standard flashlights in the observing area. Exposure to white light, even briefly, will seriously impair night vision making observing difficult. Red-filtered flashlights can provide illumination without affecting night vision. You can make a red light by cutting off the end a red balloon and putting it over a standard flashlight.

Of Special Note: Observing with telescopes is contingent upon clear weather. Cloudy or inclement weather conditions may cause programs to be cancelled without advance notification. It is suggested that you call the CAS InfoLine, 1-773-639-5491, for updated weather conditions before heading to the event. See http://www.casonline.org for more information.

    - Indiana Dunes State Park will offer a special themed weekend to explore the natural and cultural resources in the dunes from a glamping perspective June 3-5, 2016.

Glamorous camping, or glamping, is a way to experience the splendor of the outdoors without forgoing the creature comforts you can't live without. Whether in a tent, yurt, airstream, or tree house, it's camping on a grand scale.

Great family fun!

    Saturday June 4

4pm Wild Edibles Walk. Meet the Wilson Shelter for a special hour walk exploring some delicious dune delicacies found below your feet. We’ll traverse an easy part of Trail 2 and be back before 5pm. Join us!

6pm Vintage and Glamper Pot Luck Pitch-in! Glampers and glamper wannabees, head over to the Campground Shelter (by site 116) for a good stuffing of food! We’ll also give out more prizes and take a group photo.

    - The sheep at Buckley Homestead will receive their annual haircut on Sunday, June 5 at about 1 p.m. but there’s plenty to see during the free program from noon to 4 p.m. so pack up the car and bring the family.

Shearing the sheep is only the first step of the procedure of turning the wool into something useable. After being sheared the wool needs to be cleaned. When dried, it must be carded then spun into yarn. Eventually, it can be used for clothing. Watch the process as it takes place and even help out with some tasks. This is a very family friendly program. Park in the lot on Hendricks Road and walk the short trail to the farmstead.

Buckley Homestead is located 4.5 miles west of Interstate 65 just south of Route 2 on Hendricks Road in Lowell. Exit I-65 west at Rt. 2 toward Lowell to Hendricks, then south for 1/4 mile to the visitor center parking lot. Note: This is the only parking on the farm. The farmstead is a short walk along the trail.
