  • - McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society will host a presentation by Glenda Ziegler and Paula Pickrel, titled "Resurrecting a Cemetery" on October 3, 2016.

    Using genealogical research methods, dowsing rods and spades, professional cemetery conservators, Paula Pickrel and Glenda Ziegler, have literally unearthed the stories and the graves of several Illinois pioneers. Join the sisters as they share their cemetery experiences and provide tips for digging up your ancestors' graves.

    In the past five years, the sisters have completed the restoration and documentation of three abandoned cemeteries, repaired hundreds of headstones and co-authored a gravestone repair manual.

    The meeting will be held at The Pointe, 5650 Northwest Highway, Crystal Lake, IL 60014 (next to Target) at 7 pm Thursday, October 13, 2016.

    Developed by Allison Deputy over a 15-year period, Chair Tai Chi is now actively used in assisted living and health care/rehabilitation centers across suburban Chicago.

    This program is a blend of Yang Style Tai Chi forms (singled out for adaptability in a seated position), Shaolin muscle and sinew exercises, qigong (“chee-kung”) detoxing techniques, hand/finger/eye exercises, as well as healing visualization.

    Benefits: Chronic pain reduction, improved flexibility, range of motion, posture, blood pressure, sleep, digestion, and immunity. Relieves stress, anxiety, and aids in overall well-being.

    Chair Tai Chi is a unique therapeutic modality to offer in any senior or healthcare facility.

    - Sweetest Day originated in Cleveland, Ohio in 1922. Herbert Birch Kingston, a philanthropist and candy company employee wanted to bring happiness into the lives of the sick, orphans, shut-ins and others who were forgotten by distributing candy to them. Thus, Sweetest Day was born. Today is the day to do something nice for someone that will make him or her say, "Oh, that's so sweet!" Annually, the third Saturday in October.
