Jazz, Mediterranean and World Music, with a touch of classical and African influences, all blended into Sicilian lyrics, rhythms and old folk traditions. Sissy Castrogiovanni comes to The Buttonwood with her Unplugged Trio!

With her powerful and warm voice, Sissy Castrogiovanni has a unique and soulful sound. Jazz harmonies, Mediterranean and Sicilian roots, African rhythms and a touch of classical music, all combined together to support beautiful original melodies in Sicilian dialect.

Pure fire on stage. Sissy’s stunning energy comes as much from her home as it does her unique spirit. Born in Sicily (Italy) into a musical family, Sissy is firmly planted between the Mediterranean Sea and Volcano Etna in an island with a long history of foreign domination, from the Greeks to the Romans, from the Arabs to the Spanish, from the African to the Normans. The result is a mixed culture where every single domination left something to see, to taste, to hear.

It is said that music does not lie in the notes themselves but between them, and it is exactly in that space where Boston-based Finnish fretless/fretted guitarist and oudist Jussi Reijonen‘s music thrives and blossoms.

In both his original compositions and his playing, the open spaces and silences of Scandinavia effortlessly rub shoulders with the maqamat of the Arab world and the rhythmic richness of India and West Africa, creating a truly enchanting musical mosaic.

A Boston resident, Jorge Pérez-Albela is actively involved in the city’s jazz scene and frequently commutes to New York City for performances in venues such as: The Blue Note, The Jazz Standard, The Jazz Gallery,, Scullers jazz club, The Regattabar and The Berklee Performance center.

His versatility, deep knowledge of jazz and South American rhythms, and his ability to integrate jazz drums with cajón make him a one-of-a-kind musician.

Carrie Johnson, Libby Johnson, and Julia Russo cover a wide range of styles: Country, Jazz, Blues, and Pop all blend together in their works to create a unique and wondrous harmony. With music as deep and storied as their backgrounds, these three singers/songwriters are true marvels on the stage!

Carrie Johnson is a singer/songwriter whose own music crosses several genres – pop, rock and country but always with her signature style – strong vocals, memorable melodies, story telling lyrics and dynamic rhythm guitar playing. “I always put myself in a song and draw on real life experiences – usually they’re my own…” And there is a lifetime to draw upon. After attending Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Carrie headed to New York where she became a professional background and jingle singer, honing her craft as a songwriter alongside her sister Libby. They formed the critically acclaimed band 22 Brides and released five albums on the Zero Hour/Universal Record labels.

Libby Johnson's impeccable tunefulness, gorgeous melodies, and dynamic songwriting hinges between dramatic and gentle, and takes traditional coffeehouse folk to another level. There is an expansiveness to the music, fully realized and focused on Perfect View, amalgamating the ornate orchestration of Sufjan Stevens, the intimate folksiness of a Gillian Welch and the honey-textured, jazz-tinged and melodic voice of an early Bonnie Raitt .

Julia Russo is a 17 year old from the Hartford, CT area who is an undeniable singing sensation and songwriter! Beginning as a child, Julia has been performing and songwriting for years and is now making her presence known. Currently on tour in 2015, Julia is selling out shows in Boston, Connecticut and New York, sharing the stage with acclaimed songwriters.

Layers And Frames is a Philly-based duo offering a refreshing blend of guitar loops, chill, world, downtempo and folk music. It is the musical brainchild of Frederic Brewer, a French-American singer-songwriter who spent four years in China, served in the Peace Corps and developed a signature sound reflecting the globalized world. Frederic leads with vocals and looped guitar while pianist extraordinaire Mack Zoolick lays a foundation of keys, synth bass and vocal harmony. Philadelphia’s own Gashouse Radio has likened Layers And Frames to Julianna Barwick, Ben Frost and Oneohthrix, while praising “a really strong tonality foundation coupled with unusual rhythms, hypnotic piano and spaced out goodness.”
