  • The Storefront Theatre - Country Songs by Judy Simpson Cook - Mildred Cato Privette is the best doggone hairdresser in Hemby Springs, NC. However, that’s just her job. Her love is writing music and all she wants is a little affirmation that she’s good at it. She says, “I just want to hear my songs played by somebody that is somebody” and then spends the play in pursuit of that goal.

Country Songs is a funny and inspiring story about lifelong friends, old loves and new, and dreams that simply refuse to be extinguished.

  • 20th Anniversary Queens Cup - Come, Experience the thrill of the "Chase"

The Queen's Cup is like no other sporting and social event in the Charlotte region. A Saturday afternoon in the Piedmont countryside each spring is greeted with great anticipation.

Thousands come to see some of the most athletic thoroughbreds compete at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. The jockeys, dressed in bright colored silks, push their sleek steeds to clear four and a half foot jumps over a two and a quarter to as much as three miles rolling turf course. The prestige of over a record $145,000 in purse money to the winning owners and the opportunity to bask in the glory of the winner's circle is what it's all about from the horse's connections.

Beyond the excitement of the races, families and friends enjoy some fast-paced mingling and socializing each year. The Queen's Cup annually solidifies business as well as personal relationships; and keeps both strong by bringing people together year after year.

The Queen's Cup offers breathtaking views of the entire racecourse from the Lawn Boxes and Hospitality Tents on Member's Hill to key tailgating spots throughout the entire racecourse. For the first time in steeplechase history, "Personal Space Licenses" (PSL's) are being offered to our race patrons so that you and your family can enjoy your very own (and the same) Lawn Box or Tailgating Space for generations to come.

  • BEACH, BLUES & BBQ | Shows, Festivals, and Fairs
BEACH, BLUES & BBQ - BEACH, BLUES & BBQ Downtown Monroe http://www.historicdowntownmonroe.org

Downtown Monroe will once again be home to dozens of BBQ teams looking to bring home the top trophy and prize money at the Fourth Annual Beach, Blues and BBQ Festival on Saturday, May 4th from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The New Century Scholars will once again be hosting a dessert competition to benefit their organization that provides scholarships for local high school seniors and it will take place from 12-1pm. Tickets to this event will be pre-sold and will allow you to taste a variety of mouth-watering desserts and vote for your favorite.

This year the event will take place on Saturday May 4th and will again feature a Kansas City BBQ Society type Cook-Off competition. In this type of competition teams compete in four categories; Chicken, Ribs, Brisket and Pork and all these items will be available for purchase from the vending Cook-Off teams. The major difference this year will be the availability for the public to be able to taste samples of the BBQ Teams meat by purchasing a BBQ Tasting ticket from Hometown Heroes.

The festival kicks off Saturday at 11am with free entertainment, kid’s rides and games, and of course, plenty of BBQ ready for eating!

This year’s entertainment schedule will include the following:
The David Michael Band, one of North Carolina’s finest top Country radio hits performers, will kick things off performing from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m., On the Border Eagles Tribute Band from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and The Catalina's will wrap up the festival with Classic Beach Music performing from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Back by popular demand the “Touch A Truck” section will give the kids (and “big” kids) a chance to “touch” a variety of service vehicles and heavy equipment up close.
