To create an indoor sport that could be played during winter months, he nailed up peach baskets at opposite ends of the gym and gave students soccer balls to toss into them. Thus was born the game of basketball.

    - The tradition of having the US president light a national Christmas tree at the Ellipse at Washington DC dates to 1923, when President Calvin Coolidge pushed a button electrifying 2,500 bulbs on a 48-foot fir. The national tree as not lit during World War II, 1941-44. The tree has used LED lights since 2007. Annually, the first Thursday (or Friday) in December.

  • - On December 4, 1998, the shuttle Endeavour took a US component of the space station named Unity into orbit 220 miles from Earth where spacewalking astronauts fastened it to a component launched by the Russians November 20, 1998. On July 25, 2000, the Russian service module Zvezda docked with the station. On October 31, 2000, NASA launched the first expedition with a three-man crew to stay aloft for four months. Officially completed on May 27, 2011, the space state is 357 feet across and 240 feet long and supports a crew of up to six.

  • - On December 7, 1941 at 7:55AM (local time), "a date that will live in infamy," nearly 200 Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, long considered the US "Gibraltar of the Pacific." The raid, which lasted little more than one hour, left nearly 3,000 dead. Almost the entire US Pacific Fleet was at anchor there, and few ships escaped damage. Several were sunk or disabled, while 200 US aircraft on the ground were destroyed. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought about immediate US entry into WWII, a declaration of war being requested by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and approved by Congress December 8, 1941.

  • - On December 13, 1991, North and South Korea signed a treaty of reconciliation and nonaggression, formally ending the Korean War - 38 years after fighting ceased in 1953. This agreement was not hailed as a peace treaty, and the armistice that was signed July 27, 1953, between the UN and North Korea, was to remain in effect until it could be transformed into a formal peace.

    - On December 14, 1911. The elusive object of many expeditions dating from the 17th century, the South Pole was located and visited by Ronald Amundsen with four companions and 52 sled dogs. All five men and 12 of the dogs returned to base camp safely. Next to visit the South Pole, January 17, 1912, was a party led by Captain Robert F. Scott, all of whom perished during the return trip.

  • - On December 17. 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright, brothers, bicycle-shop operators, inventors and aviation pioneers, after three years of experimentation with kites and gliders, achieved the first documented successful powered and controlled flights of an airplane. The flights, near Kitty Hawk, NC, piloted first by Orville and then by Wilber Wright, were sustained for less than one minute but represented man's first powered airplane flight and the beginning of a new form of transportation. Orville Wright was born at Dayton, OH on August 19, 1871 and died there January 30, 1948. Wilbur Wright was born at Millville, IN on April 16, 1867 and died at Dayton OH on May 30, 1912.
