    The season opener begins with C.P.E. Bach’s post-Baroque Symphony in D from 1775 and ends with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, which premiered a century later. It took twenty years to compose but Brahms’ work endures as the greatest First Symphony ever written.

    Guest artist Fabian Lopez plays Prokofiev’s energetic Violin Concerto No. 2, the best-known and loved of Prokofiev’s violin works. Tchaikovsky conducted the premiere of his Symphony No. 6 (“Pathetique”) nine days before his untimely death. He termed the work “the best thing I have composed.”

    Mozart’s Symphony No. 28, composed in his teens, radiates an aura of fully formed genius. Paul Hindemith’s masterful Symphony: Mathis der Maler (Matthias the Painter) is drawn from his opera about an artist caught in the world of politics. Tubist Daniel Johnson brings the heavy metal for Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto - one of the composer’s most popular works, and essential repertoire for professional tubists.

Deas Student Concerto Competition.
