BOOK GROUP DISCUSSIONS

Sponsored by the Fremont Branch of

American Association of University Women

Held at the Fremont Main Library

Fremont Main Library is co-sponsoring three book group discussions organized by The Fremont Branch of American Association of University Women.  The three scheduled discussion sessions are:  Thursday, July 17, 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.; Tuesday, August 19, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, September 10, 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

The featured title is Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.  This non-fiction book was on the New York Times Best Seller List for over a year and highlights one man’s incredible journey from mountain climber to beloved philanthropist.  Mortenson writes about how he survived his dangerous climb of K2 in Pakistan thanks to villagers in a remote mountain area, and how he made their dream of a school for children and girls come true.  That was in 1993.  Since then, he has gone on to build over 70 schools, principally for girls, in remote villages in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The book discussions are also part of the “ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY” reading program for the city of Fremont.  Mayor Bob Wasserman signed a proclamation at the June 11, 2008 City Council meeting urging all Fremont residents to read, “Three Cups of Tea”.  The culmination of the community reading program will be a visit by author Mortenson to Fremont.  The date for this has not yet been set.  Read the book and come share your thoughts with us!  All three sessions are free and everyone is welcome.
