Everyone reading this newsletter can help feed families in need by placing non-perishable grocery items by their mailboxes on Saturday, May 10th. Just think of how much food could be collected for our local food bank and organizations that serve folks in need if we all just left one bag of items for our carriers to pick up. Let's make this year a phenomenal success! This is a national event (almost 1,300 postal branches nationwide) so be sure to remind your family and friends in other parts of the country to check to see if their area is participating. If you'd like to go above & beyond the call of duty, volunteers will be needed at local post offices to sort through all of the food we'll be collecting. Durham & Wake counties: Letter Carriers will be delivering individual's donations to post offices through out Wake and Durham counties in the afternoon of the 12th. Individual and group volunteers are needed to help receive these food donations at the Post Offices. We hope that you will be able to volunteer on the 10th; All volunteers will be given a NALC t-shirt and snacks will be available throughout the day. Mothers DayMothers Day was first observed in 1907 at the request of Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, PA, who asked her church to hold a service in memory of all Mothers on the anniversary of her mothers death. In 1909, Jarvis and friends began a letter-writing campaign to create a Mothers Day observance. Congress passed legislation in 1914 designating the second Sunday in May as Mothers Day, a day to recognize ALL Mothers.
All information about Mothers Day is from "The Folklore of American Holidays," Third Edition, Hennig Cohen and Tristram Potter Coffin, 1999.
