    - Visit the L. W. Paul Living History Farm to celebrate the pig! Winter was the time of year for curing pork on the farm and a season when the family was dependent on home preserved foods during the cold winter months. Staff and volunteers will demonstrate how pork was preserved and prepared on the family farm during the early twentieth century in Horry County. Demonstrations will include smoking and salting meat, making pork sausage, cooking on a wood stove, making lye soap, grinding grits, blacksmithing and other traditional farm activities.
This free event will be held January 20th from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. The L. W. Paul Living History Farm re-creates life on the one horse family farm in Horry County from 1900-1955 and is located at 2279 Harris Short Cut Road in Conway, South Carolina.

Welcome to Pirate Adventures of Myrtle Beach! A place where children come to experience the magic of sailing away in search of sunken treasure. Come aboard our pirate ship and get caught up in this real life adventure. Be amazed as our crew taps into the wonder of a child’s imagination. Your child will be painted with a curly mustache or with an anchor tattoo, dressed with a lucky tea sure hunting vest and marched off to the ship.

Once aboard, the young pirates will learn the rules at sea aboard the Sea Gypsy and use a treasure map to find the sunken treasure. As the crew searches for clues, they discover that Pirate Pete, the smiliest, most rotten, pirate on the Seven Seas, is lurking nearby, and he has something our brave crew needs. Off we go into battle with our famous water cannons! Will the crew defeat Pirate Pete and find the sunken treasure!?!
Aboard the Sea Gypsy, we always find the treasure, we always defeat that Pirate Pete, and the children always walk away with incredible stories!

    - Experience life on the “one horse farm” in Horry County from 1900-1955 at the L.W. Paul Living History Farm. Join us on February 1st from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM to learn about hog haslet and chitterlings. For most families in Horry County, pork was an important source of food. As much of the pig as possible was used for food when on the farm butchering took place. The heart, liver and lungs were cooked together to make a once a year dish called haslet. The small intestines would also be cleaned and stuffed with sausage and hung to be dried or cooked fresh into chitterlings. Join us to learn more about these foods and see how they would have been prepared and cooked on the wood burning stove.
A free, hour long, guided tour of the Farm will be available to the public at 3:00 PM following the demonstration.
The L. W. Paul Living History Farm is open Tuesday-Saturday 9 AM-4 PM and teaches the history of the Horry County farm family. The farm is free and open to the public and is located at the corner of Hwy 701 North and Harris Short Cut Road in Conway, SC. For more information, call the L. W. Paul Living History Farm at 843-365-3596 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. For a full list of programs and events at the Horry County Museum and L.W. - The Horry County Museum and The AVX Foundation present a lecture by Jannie Harriot and Dawn Dawson-House on Saturday, February 3rd, on historic African American sites in Horry & Georgetown Counties.
From Rosenwald and colored schools, to historic churches and slave cabins, the African American footprint in Horry and Georgetown counties is broad and significant. It is also often hidden in plain sight. Join members of the SC African American Heritage Commission as they help rediscover these historic gems through the Green Book of South Carolina, an online travel guide to historic markers and sites associated with African American heritage. Project leaders Dawn Dawson-House of the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism, and Jannie Harriot of the South Carolina African American Heritage Foundation, will lead the discussion.
Jannie Harriot has served on the board of many community organizations and currently serves as vice chairperson of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission and executive director of the South Carolina African American Heritage Foundation. She was the founding chairperson of the Butler Heritage Foundation and instrumental in getting the Darlington County Board of Education to deed the Butler School to the Foundation for restoration and preservation. As a charter member of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission, appointed by Governor Carroll Campbell in 1993 she served as the chairperson for six years, three years as secretary and currently serves as vice chairperson.
Dawn Dawson-House is Director of Corporate Communications for the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism. She directs a program that shapes and shares the agency’s good work toward growing tourism, operating 47 state parks and providing assistance to communities for tourism and recreation development. She is editor of the monthly e-newsletter “South Carolina Tourism Today,” and serves as spokesperson for the agency.
The program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street, Conway SC and is free and open to the public. For more information, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. To view a full list of programs, visit our website at click for details.

    - The 2018 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with Jail, No Bail, part of the Carolina Stories Series produced by SCETV. On January 31, 1961, black students from Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, SC walked into McCrory’s, sat at the lunch counter, and ordered hamburgers and soft drinks. They were denied service and asked to leave. After refusing to leave, the students were arrested for trespassing and processed. This 30 minute program pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the ‘Friendship Nine’ sit-in protest that inspired the Jail, No Bail Movement, a strategy which turned the tables on the establishment and reinvigorated the National Civil Rights Movement.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, February 14th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
The Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2018. For a full list of films, visit our website at click for details. For more information, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.

    - St. Valentine's Day celebrates the feasts of two Christian martyrs of this name. One, a priest and physician, was beaten and beheaded on the Flaminan Way at Rome, Italy, Feb 14, AD 269, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Another Valentine, the bishop of Terni, is said to have been beheaded, also on the Flaminian Way at Rome, Feb 14 (possibly in a later year). Both history and legend are vague and contradictory about details of the Valentines, and some say that Feb 14 was selected for the celebration of Christian martyrs as a diversion from the ancient pagan observance of Lupercalia. An old legend has it that birds choose their mates on Valentine's Day. Now it is one of the most widely observed unofficial holidays. It is an occasion for the exchange of gifts (usually books, flowers, or sweets) and greeting cards with affectionate or humorous messages.
