  • | 1:00pm - 2:00pm | Local Events
    - The 2017 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with The Last Auction, part of the Carolina Stories Series produced by SCETV. For more than 100 years Mullins was the major tobacco market for South Carolina. Since 1997 the tobacco allotment has been cut in half, textile manufacturers have moved away and Mullins, a town of 5,000 has lost more than 1,200 jobs. Although The Last Auction is the story of a small South Carolina town, the issues it explores: agricultural mechanization, rural unemployment, exodus of youth from small towns, and loss of manufacturing jobs, are of national significance.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, September 27th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
The Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2017. For a full list of films, visit our website at click for details. For more information, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.

  • | 1:00pm - 2:00pm | Local Events, Lectures, History, Museum, Tours, Free, All Ages, Senors
    - The Horry County Museum and The AVX Foundation present a lecture by Rodger Stroup on Saturday, September 30th, on funeral and mourning customs in South Carolina.
Ever wonder how we arrived at our current way of saying goodbye to friends and loved ones after their passing? Most of us know something about Egyptian mummies just from watching movies and going to blockbuster exhibits like “King Tut” and “Ramses.” But we know little about how our current customs developed in the United States and specifically in the South. Funeral and burial practices have evolved over the last 350 years in South Carolina and are now a blend of European, African and totally American traditions. If you don’t know what a ‘memory jug” is come and find out.
A native of St. Louis, MO, Rodger Stroup grew up in Charlotte, NC and graduated with a B.A. Degree in History from Wofford College in 1968. After serving in the Army Signal Corps, Stroup attended graduate school at the University of South Carolina where his major fields of study included Southern and South Carolina History. • - October 1, 1932 in the fifth inning of game three of the 1932 World Series, with a count of two balls and two strikes, Babe Ruth pointed to the center field bleachers in Chicago's Wrigley Field and followed up by hitting a soaring home run high above the very spot to which he had just gestured. Did he really call his shot? Some Disagree, some eyewitnesses and Cubs pitcher Charlie Root believe he did not. Even Babe Ruth's Daughter said that he denied it, but Babe himself also claimed he did it.

    - The 2017 Horry County Museum Documentary Film Series continues with the film War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator. War Birds is a documentary film about three American pilots who flew with the Royal Air Force during World War I. The film chronicles the exploits of John Grider, Elliott White Springs, and Larry Callahan, all known as the “Three Musketeers”. War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator was originally published after World War I and became a bestseller. It was assumed that the diary was written and kept by Grider, the only member of the trio to be killed in action. However, it was later discovered in 1959 that Springs, who later became president of Spring Cotton Mills, Inc. and founder of Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC, wrote and published the work in memory of his friend and other pilots who had died in the war.
The film is free to the public and will be shown at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, October 4th, at the Horry County Museum, located at 805 Main Street in Conway.
The Horry County Museum Documentary Film Matinees will continue throughout 2017. For a full list of films, visit our website at click for details. For more information, call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org.

Welcome to Pirate Adventures of Myrtle Beach! A place where children come to experience the magic of sailing away in search of sunken treasure. Come aboard our pirate ship and get caught up in this real life adventure. Be amazed as our crew taps into the wonder of a child’s imagination. Your child will be painted with a curly mustache or with an anchor tattoo, dressed with a lucky tea sure hunting vest and marched off to the ship.

Once aboard, the young pirates will learn the rules at sea aboard the Sea Gypsy and use a treasure map to find the sunken treasure. As the crew searches for clues, they discover that Pirate Pete, the smiliest, most rotten, pirate on the Seven Seas, is lurking nearby, and he has something our brave crew needs. Off we go into battle with our famous water cannons! Will the crew defeat Pirate Pete and find the sunken treasure!?!
Aboard the Sea Gypsy, we always find the treasure, we always defeat that Pirate Pete, and the children always walk away with incredible stories!

Fun things to do in North Myrtle Beach

Since 1986 the Town Planner Calendar has been keeping families across America up-to-date about events and other fun things to do right in their hometown.

Delivered free of charge every December to millions of homes across America, our full-sized, full-color calendar is a time-tested and beloved tool for helping families stay organized. The large date blocks are not only loaded with lots of nearby events and fun things to do, there's plenty of room for you to record your own family's important events like birthdays, anniversaries, parties -- anything you have planned -- so everybody in the house can see them whenever they go to the fridge, out the front door, or wherever you choose to display it.

But there's more! Every calendar is full of coupons from popular local merchants, so you can save money while supporting small businesses right in your hometown.

And don't miss our beautiful full-color photography! Every month you'll recognize a new photo from someplace close to home, submitted to us by a local photographer. If you'd like to have your own hometown photos included in our calendar, please contact your local publisher for more information.

We truly believe it's better to "keep it local". From coast to coast and border to border, our network of franchisees work with organizations and merchants right in their community to make sure you get the information and savings you care about. We prefer to feature family-friendly events that are a short walk or drive away, and coupons from local businesses so you can support your hometown economy.

If there's something happening close to home that folks in your neighborhood need to know about, why not submit it to us today? Please note that publication of your event is subject to approval by your local Town Planner publisher.

If there's no Town Planner calendar in your area, you could be looking at a great business opportunity! Town Planner franchisees set their own hours and can work out of their homes while providing a valuable service to both homeowners and local businesses in the area.
