  • - October 1, 1932 in the fifth inning of game three of the 1932 World Series, with a count of two balls and two strikes, Babe Ruth pointed to the center field bleachers in Chicago's Wrigley Field and followed up by hitting a soaring home run high above the very spot to which he had just gestured. Did he really call his shot? Some Disagree, some eyewitnesses and Cubs pitcher Charlie Root believe he did not. Even Babe Ruth's Daughter said that he denied it, but Babe himself also claimed he did it.

    - 1871. Great fire of Chicago began, according to legend, when mrs. O'Leary's cow kicked over her lantern in her barn on DeKoven street. The fire leveled 3 1/2 square miles, destroying 17,450 buildings and leaving 98,500 people homeless and about 250 people dead. Financially, the loss was $200 million. On the same day, a fire destroyed entire town of Peshtigo, WI, killing more than 1,1 people.
