Hunger: that is the only word I can think of to describe the vibe around the inaugural Table Française February 4th 2020 in Breaux Bridge, LA. It was scheduled to start at 5:30pm and everyone was there on time. They wanted to be there. I was surprised that 16 people were there on the first night. Some had been to French Tables elsewhere, some had never been but had always wanted to attend, but they all wanted to be there tonight. They were eager. Mostly strangers to one and other, they jumped right into the typically Southern “who do you know that I know” conversations… en français. Perhaps to outsiders it was a cacophony of sounds, but it sounded like a symphony to me. Accents abound! It was enough to make this Cana-Jun’s heart explode. As the volume blossomed, a mustached man from "la ville de St-Martin" asked La Capitaine: "What do people do at a French Table?" She leaned over the table and whispered to him and his bride: "They're doing it right now" and giggled. Conversation en français this-a-way; conversation en français that-a-way… but he was right, we needed to draw in the reins or we'd just chit-chat until the staff at Tante Marie kicked us out.
