WHY:
Indianapolis native and Bishop Chatard High School graduate Jazmyne Harris was diagnosed with Friedreich's ataxia (FA) when she was just 14 years old. In 2010, her father Virgil Harris started Jumpin’ for Jazz, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, to raise awareness and funds to help people like his daughter suffering from this degenerative disease.

Friedreich's ataxia is a rare, untreatable and incurable degenerative neuro-muscular disorder that affects approximately one in 50,000 people in the United States. Most people with FA are diagnosed between the ages of 5-18 and develop motor incapacitation that requires mobility aids such as a cane, walker or wheelchair by their teens or early 20s. Few live past the age of 35.

Today, 22-year-old Jazmyne and her father are hopeful that fundraising for FA can improve the quality and length of life for those diagnosed with FA and empower research organizations to find the cure.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on June 10, The Jazz Kitchen will host a public benefit concert for Jumpin’ for Jazz. All proceeds raised will go toward the fight to find a cure for FA. Tickets are $20 per person prepaid online or $25 per person at the door. Guests will enjoy music from popular local bands The Rob Dixon Trio (led by saxophonist Rob Dixon), The Morris Kienle Duo (violinist Cathy Morris and guitarist Peter Kienle) and jazz combo Fresh Water. Guest speaker Mark Payne, M.D., a noted researcher on FA and related diseases, will provide an update on research and funding. Dr. Payne is one of the few medical professionals specializing in this family of neurological diseases and has documented encouraging results in clinical trials.

Those who can’t attend the benefit concert can support the cause online through the Jumpin’ for Jazz CrowdRise page. Because such rare diseases don’t promise large-scale returns that attract big pharma, every dollar matters for research and clinical trials.
