French-born cellist Thomas Maternik-Piret began playing cello at the age of eight in Avignon, France. After studying at Dijon and Paris Conservatoires with Professor Christian Wolff and Helene Dautry, he was offered a scholarship in 2005 to study with Jerome Pernoo at the Royal College of Music of London where he graduated with honors in 2009.
During his studies, he became the recipient of several prizes including the second prize at the International Glazunov cello competition, the first prize for Virtuosity and Excellence at Fresnes Conservatoire in Paris, and regularly appeared as a soloist with orchestras. He also won the first prize at Ealing International Chamber Music competition which resulted in invitations to perform chamber music in Europe and Brazil. As an orchestra player, he has performed with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and held the principal chair of the Classical Concert Chamber Orchestra in California.
Alongside his performing career, Thomas has a teaching license from the Royal College of Music of London. His interest in taking music beyond the limits of conventional performances led him to become the artistic director of two foundations that brought music and performances to hospitals and other healthcare establishments for people with limited access to the arts.
Thomas recently moved to the United States where he continues his cello career in eastern Tennessee and North Carolina. He teaches at the East Tennessee State University and the Blair Academy for the Arts in Johnson City, and is highly in demand for private lessons, adult cello workshops, and chamber music coaching.
