More About UNICEF CHICAGO HUMANITARIAN AWARDS HONORS LOCAL LEADERS CONTRIBUTING TO THE IM

WHAT:
On Friday, October 11th, the Midwest Regional Office of UNICEF USA will host its ninth annual UNICEF Chicago Humanitarian Awards Luncheon to honor extraordinary leaders who are contributing locally and internationally to the improvement of children’s lives.

This year’s recipients are Frederick (F.K.) Day (Co-Founder) and Leah Missbach Day (Co-Founder) of World Bicycle Relief, a proven leader in implementing large-scale philanthropic bicycle programs in the rural developing world and Helene D. Gayle, President and CEO of The Chicago Community Trust, one of the nation’s oldest and largest community foundations. The recipients will be honored for their philanthropic work to improve children's lives.

The luncheon theme will be centered around The International Day of the Girl, also celebrated on October 11th. The International Day of the Girl focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, not only during these critical formative years, but also as they mature into women. If effectively supported during the adolescent years, girls have the potential to change the world – both as the empowered girls of today and as tomorrow’s workers, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, political leaders and mothers.

WHY:
UNICEF USA wants all children to have a happy, healthy childhood regardless of location. UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories to put children first and has helped save more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization.
