Lesta Sue Hardee: Legendary Locals of Myrtle Beach

Lesta Sue Hardee: Legendary Locals of Myrtle Beach

More About Lesta Sue Hardee: Legendary Locals of Myrtle Beach

The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a program by local author Lesta Sue Hardee, on Saturday, September 14th on her book, Legendary Locals of Myrtle Beach.
Simeon B. Chapin was an entrepreneur and visionary who, along with Franklin G. Burroughs, helped create the foundation of what is Myrtle Beach today. B.B. Benfield built and opened the area’s first movie theater, and Lawrence Boulier was a landscape artist and founder of the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild. Earl Husted brought the first amusement park rides to this area, and Anthony James left after high school to make a name for himself as the first widely known actor from the Myrtle Beach area. Some of these names may be unfamiliar, but each of these legendary locals, in his or her own way, has helped make Myrtle Beach the historical hometown and vacationers’ paradise that it is today
Lesta Sue Hardee, a Myrtle Beach native, is active in preserving the history of Myrtle Beach through oral history interviews and the archiving of materials that she comes across at work and during her personal genealogy and local research. She loves Myrtle Beach and is always willing to share a story or two. Besides Legendary Locals, she is the coauthor of Myrtle Beach Pavilion.
The program will begin at 1:00 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street, Conway S.C. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. To view a full list of programs, visit our website at click for details.

More About this Event Poster: Horry County Museum

The Horry County Museum was established in 1979 and opened its doors to the public in 1981. The Museum focuses on the history, pre-history, and natural history of Horry County, S.C., and educates the public about these subjects through exhibits, outreach programs, and events. In 2009, the Museum opened the L. W. Paul Living History Farm. The Farm is a re-creation of life on a one horse family farm between the years of 1900-1955. Visitors to the farm can experience what life was like in a farm community during those years and attend quarterly events at the Farm. In 2014, the Museum moved into the renovated 1905 Burroughs School. The school is on the National Register of Historic Places. The move includes increased exhibits, a freshwater aquarium featured on Animal Planet’s hit reality show “Tanked”, and a 600 seat auditorium that hosts public presentations and programs.
