First Responders Monument Dedication & Service

First Responders Monument Dedication & Service

More About First Responders Monument Dedication & Service

In the first 3 months of this year, a First Responder in the United States was killed or seriously injured every 54 hours on average. We all know and appreciate those in our Fire Departments, Police Departments, and Emergency Medical services yet we don't often think of the risk and sacrifice that is a part of their jobs. On September 22, First United Methodist Church of Crown Point will be unveiling and dedicating a memorial in the Southwest corner of their church yard to all First Responders. This memorial will join a revamped memorial to the victims of the September 11th attack already on that corner. This public memorial, the only such memorial to First Responders in Lake County, will serve as a reminder to our community of the heroism of all those who lay down their lives and safety daily for our well-being.

At 11 am that day, First United Methodist invites the Northwest Indiana community and members of all the Fire, Police and EMT services from throughout Northwest Indiana to gather for a service of prayer, blessing, and memorial. The featured speaker for this dedication will be Tim McCarthy. Police Chief McCarthy has been the Police Chief in Orland Park, Illinois for over 20 years, but first rose to the national consciousness on March 30, 1981 when, as a Secret Service member on the Presidential Protection detail, he selflessly threw himself in the path of a bullet intended for President Ronald Reagan. His heroism and selfless dedication on that day, and in the career that followed, are an epitome of what being a First Responder is all about.
