LCCC Film Series
Date: November 8, 2019
Time: 7:30 pm

Location: Hoke Theatre of Stocker Arts Center

Cost: $7/each

1980 (R) 124 min. USA
Director: Robert Redford
Cast: Timothy Hutton, Mary Tyler Moore, Judd Hirsch, Donald Sutherland, Elizabeth McGovern

Devastated by the loss of their older son, well-to-do suburban couple Calvin and Beth are trying to rebuild their lives after their younger son, Conrad, attempts suicide. While Beth, who always favored the elder son, retreats into an icy, emotionless shell, Calvin tries to draw Conrad back into the family and into life as a teenager. Conrad sings in the choir and returns to the swim team, but both his brother’s death and his own experiences traumatize him. Conrad reluctantly begins therapy sessions with Berger, which allow him some respite from the unbearable grief and guilt he carries with him. As Conrad makes strides, Calvin realizes that he no longer knows his wife and is both saddened and angered by how seemingly emotionless she has become. A classic portrait of family life in the face of tragedy, Robert Redford’s award-winning directorial debut is moving and thought provoking. Based on the novel by Judith Guest, the film features the debuts of Timothy Hutton and Elizabeth McGovern as well as breakthrough performances from Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland.

A DISCUSSION SESSION WILL FOLLOW THE FILM.

“Each character in this movie is given the dramatic opportunity to look inside himself, to question his own motives as well as the motives of others, and to try to improve his own ways of dealing with a troubled situation. Two of the characters do learn how to adjust; the third doesn’t. It’s not often we get characters who face those kinds of challenges on the screen, nor directors who seek them out. ORDINARY PEOPLE is an intelligent, perceptive, and deeply moving film.” – Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

“With the skill of a practiced surgeon, Redford gradually peels away the protective layers of his characters, exposing their flaws, their darkest fears and ultimately, their innermost feelings.” – Kathleen Carroll, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

“An austere and delicate examination of the ways in which a likable family falters under pressure and struggles, with ambiguous results, to renew itself. This is not very show-bizzy stuff, but for once, a movie star has used his power to create not light entertainment or a trendy political statement, but a work that addresses itself quietly and intelligently to issues everyone who attempts to raise children must face.” – Richard Schickel, TIME

“A moving, intelligent and funny film about disasters that are commonplace to everyone except the people who experience them. Not since Robert Benton’s KRAMER VS. KRAMER has there been a movie that so effectively catches the look, sound and temper of a particular kind of American existence.” – Vincent Canby, THE NEW YORK TIMES.

More About this Event Poster: Lorain County Community College

LCCC is Focused on Student Success
Lorain County Community College (LCCC) was named as an Aspen Institute Top 150 U.S. Community College – the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges. This follows it being named a Leader College of Distinction by Achieving the Dream in 2019 and the top community college in the country for Excellence in Student Success by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) in 2018. According to a recent report on three-year success measures from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, LCCC's success rate of 60 percent is higher than the state average of 51 percent. Additionally, more Lorain County high school students are taking advantage of College Credit Plus options to earn college credit while in high school. In fact, 43 percent of all Lorain County high school seniors graduate with some college credit – saving families $6.5 million. LCCC is also one of only three community colleges in Ohio that have been approved to offer an applied bachelor’s degree. Students can now earn a bachelor’s of applied science degree in microelectronic manufacturing – with local jobs waiting for them. LCCC is important to the community as 1 in 4 Lorain County residents has attended LCCC and more than 85 percent of our graduates work in Northeast Ohio.
