More About Shanksville Community Picnic
The annual Shanksville Community Picnic, in its 94th year, will be held on Friday and Saturday, August 4 and 5, 2023 at the community grove, 1291 Cornerstone Road, Friedens, PA 15541, just east of Shanksville below the school. The Community Picnic has been sponsored for the past 70 years by the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department, and is a major fundraiser, helping to pay for operating expenses, equipment updates, training, and to put the final touches on a major addition to the fire station.
Food and games open on Friday at 4 pm, with a Main Street parade at 6 pm and an incredible free concert from 7 – 9:30 by the nationally known tribute band Bon Journey playing the best of Bon Jovi and Journey. Bring a chair or blanket for concert seating.
On Saturday the kitchen opens at 11 am serving barbecued chicken, popcorn chicken, burgers, hot dogs, baked beans, creamy coleslaw, mac and cheese, fresh-cut French fries, a wide variety of pies sold by the slice, hand-dipped ice cream, and cold drinks.
Activities include a HUGE basket raffle (including Steelers tickets!), a gun raffle, games of skill and chance operating throughout the day, a corn hole tournament and a horseshoe pitching contest, both with cash prizes. Registration for both contests begins at noon, and the competitions start at 1 PM.
For the kids there will be an opportunity to get up close to a fire truck and use a real fire hose, jump in the inflatable race, and play the dime toss, duck pond, mechanical pig race, and other games. At 12:30 PM there will be a visit from the Med Star helicopter, schedule permitting.
There will be music all day beginning with DJ Kool Rock from 11 – 2 and 4 – 7. The popular acoustic duo, Partners in Crime featuring Shanksville graduate Gary Miller (class of 1973) will play from 2 - 4. At 7 pm the 70s and 80s classic rock cover band Dimwit takes the stage for a free concert until 10 pm. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy this concert as well.
This year the department extends a special welcome to “The Great Reunion” of the Shanksville-Stonycreek High School classes from 1960 through 1970 and the 50 year reunion of the class of 1973.
Everyone is invited to the Shanksville Community Picnic. Don’t miss it!
