It all started when my son Peter and I were on a train coming back from the NY Gift Fair in February 2012. This was his first "buying" trip, and we found ourselves attracted to many textured, colorful, offbeat products - not ones that I would traditionally buy for our online store. So we bought them of course. The "brick and mortar" idea was born on that train ride. Even the name was created that day. Hazel was my Nanas name on my mom's side, and Daze......well, it complimented the Hazel with the matching Z, but also had a certain feel to it, a play on words and as well as a funky aura.

Still, it was a full blown fantasy, and was never mentioned again, until one day, on a whim, I popped into a commercial realtors office and told them what I thought I wanted. Nothing hit the spot or my budget, until a few days later, when I got a call back and was introduced to my current
location - 86 Post Road, across from Vinny's.

This space was the former Hookah Lounge, I was told, and had a very colorful background. The stories that the Fairfield Police and my landlord eventually told me were haunting.

Nonetheless, it seemed to fit, and was further solidified when the first name I saw on the graffiti laden basement wall was the name of my oldest son. Many strange coincidences and reaffirmations would follow, but somehow it just seemed like the right place for Hazel Daze to begin!

So, I took the rental and we plunged in. Without my amazing network of family and friends, Hazel Daze would not be up and running today. It was a huge undertaking to ready the space to become what our imaginations told us it could be, and we all worked endlessly to achieve that goal. I had a time frame in mind and we were able to make it happen - we opened in less than a month, on June 8, 2012!

Since that NY Gift Fair back in February, Peter and I have been to another, and spent almost the whole time on the Fair Trade floor. We believe strongly in promoting the work of artists from all corners of the world, whose beautiful, unique creations are produced in positive working conditions and in an environmentally conscientious manner.

"Fair Trade is a system focused on alleviating global poverty and promoting sustainability through ethical global trade. By supporting fair trade products, you are taking a step towards making the world a better place". What could be better than that??
