More About Valerie Stephens presents Nina Simone & Hip Hop

Each generation develops its own language. Hip-hop is the language of this generation. Nina Simone sang for the previous generation of activists and dissenters. The messages of both groups are universal and Nina Simone’s music and message are still very relevant but not well known. “Nina’s unapologetic rage and accusatory voice named names and took no prisoners in the African-American struggle for equality in the early 1960s. Her triumphant voice sang what it meant to be young, gifted and black in a sometimes unjust and troubled world” (Hall of Fame announcement 2017).

Valerie Stephens has partnered with hip hop artist Yukihiro Kanesaka to bring to the stage this universality and the power of Nina Simone for today’s artists and their appreciators. Mississippi GodDamn speaks to #BlackLivesMatter. Four Women speaks to #MeToo. Brown Baby speaks to I Want To Live. Join us as we bridge generations with music and spoken word. Nina Simone is a member of the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2018.
