More About Plastic Bottle Hulls. Why Cylinders Float So Well 🚤

Look at a plastic bottle closely and you will notice something interesting. Its cylindrical shape helps it float easily. The air sealed inside gives strong buoyancy, while the round body spreads weight evenly across the water. That simple design turns recycled bottles into excellent hulls for toy sailboats.

Long before plastic bottles existed, sailors used similar ideas. Traditional Arabian dhows had long, narrow hulls that sliced through water smoothly. The same principle works for small pond yachts built at home.

Try turning a recycled bottle into a simple dhow-style boat.

Materials Needed:

● 1 empty plastic bottle with cap
● Wooden skewer or small dowel for mast
● Cardboard or cloth for sail
● Small stones or washers for ballast

Have a clever bottle hull idea? Email the Sail Monkey at TBClark123@gmail.com and tell the Sail Monkey how your recycled dhow sailed across the pond. ‍
