Garden Celebration XIV: For the Love of Gardening

Enjoy overflowing floral baskets, homegrown tomatoes, and all things garden? If so, add to your calendar this year’s Garden Celebration from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Scott Hall, Johnson County Fairgrounds, Franklin, IN.

The 14th annual Johnson County Garden Club and Purdue Master Gardeners event will include more than 40 flower, plant, and garden-art vendors. Guest speakers include:

9:30 a.m. - Bill McNight recently released his self-published 450-page, 106 chapter book, Rantings of a Mad Botanist, written to help gardeners and property managers avoid mistakes. A professionally trained botanist and experienced gardener, McNight lives and gardens on a three-acre property on the northeast side of Indianapolis. McKnight, otherwise known as The Mad Botanist, will present Best Fragrant Plants for the Midwest Garden.

10:30 a.m. - John Hefner, retired educator and Dean of Boys at Perry Meridian Middle School, is a nationally renowned rose-grower and exhibitor. Representing the Indianapolis Rose Society, Hefner will present Roses 101, basic information about creating a rose garden and how to solve horticultural issues in growing roses.

11:30 a.m. (for adults) / 1:00 p.m. (for kids) - Greg Marlett, the Conservation Programs Director for Morgan County Soil and Water Conservation District, owns Hard Way Farms in Martinsville, a micro farm specializing in sustainable growing methods. An Indiana Master Gardener and Naturalist, Marlett will discuss micro-gardening techniques using his Mobile Garden Classroom.

Seed packets and tree saplings will be given away while supplies last. Garden Café will sell breakfast and lunch items prepared by Ron Kelsay Catering. The show’s entrance fee is $2. Children 12 and under are admitted free.
