Community Invited to The Great Big Garden Party at Lakewood Cemetery

Celebrating 150 Years with a Picnic-Style Gathering on Lakewood’s Front Lawn

WHEN: Sunday, August 21, 2022
WHAT: The Great Big Garden Party at Lakewood Cemetery 150 years ago, before there was a Minneapolis Park Board and before Minneapolis art museums, if you were looking for a beautiful spot to picnic, see
stunning monuments, and socialize with family, friends and neighbors, you might have gone to the cemetery. Lakewood, then situated far outside the city center, offered the added bonus that you could sit beside loved ones who had passed on.
To celebrate 150 years of service to the community, Lakewood is honoring its roots as an historic, garden-style cemetery and welcoming the public to gather together to enjoy the beauty of Lakewood with activities including:
• Picnicking on the grassy lawn near Lakewood’s Living Memory Tree
• Live music from local new-classical duo The OK Factor
• Horse-drawn carriage rides
• Art and craft activities
• Adding ribbons to Lakewood’s Living Memory Tree, in honor of someone
loved and lost

The Great Big Garden Party is made possible thanks to the generosity of the Lakewood Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization created to sustain Lakewood as a local treasure by supporting educational programming and the preservation and restoration of Lakewood’s landscape, art, architecture and public spaces—for the benefit of all.
