More About Christmas at the Indianapolis Zoo

Enjoy the warm glow of twinkling lights and the magical nighttime experience that is Christmas at the Zoo! Dating back to 1967, the Indianapolis Zoo was the first zoo in the nation to hold a holiday lights event. Now in its 50th year, Christmas at the Zoo is a beloved holiday tradition!

This year’s celebration is bigger than ever with Mondays and Tuesdays added in as well as extended hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Best of all, it's included with Zoo admission and free for members!

Under our Bicentennial Pavilion, Santa’s Village is our newest addition. Decorate cookies in Mrs. Claus' Kitchen, encounter wintertime animals, see mementos from Santa’s world travels and meet the Jolly Ol’ Elf himself inside his charming study.

Many of our more robust animals will be out late to enjoy the cooler weather, including tigers, red panda, brown bears, walrus and many others. Plus, learn more about your favorites during special animal chats. If your cheeks get rosy, dash inside to get warm and visit the animals in the Dolphin Dome, Deserts, Oceans and our Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center.

As the sun sets, the warm glow of twinkling lights fills the Zoo, creating a magical nighttime experience. While taking in the lights, warm up with a cup of hot cocoa, sample some delicious holiday treats and enjoy the sounds of choirs singing.
