More About This Is Us; Ithaca

A moderated panel discussion about adoption, family and relationships.

This is Us has captured the attention of millions with its candid portrayal of families today, the intricacies of who and what constitutes family and how these relationships shape our identities as individuals and as a family unit.

Please join the Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition of New York and Ithaca College for a real life discussion with our panel of characters including birth parents, adoptive parents, adoption professionals and, adopted persons.

Through a moderated panel presentation, we will explore how we construct family today, the meaning this has for us, and how to create a social context in which today’s families are embraced and celebrated for the rich diversity this brings to all of our lives.

Television programming such as This is Us allows us to use a culturally relevant and timely media hit to have a deeper discussion about the complexities of families today, the realities of these experiences, and the need to educate our communities in order that all families have access to what they need to be strong.

More About this Event Poster: Adoptive and Foster Family Coalition of New York

Founded in 1975, the Coalition unites adoptive and foster parent groups, concerned agencies and individuals throughout the Empire State. We represent the families’ viewpoint and work to improve and expand the services available to children and families.

Our goals are to:

Educate and support foster, kinship and adoptive parents and the professionals who serve them through information-sharing, services, peer support and referral.
Improve services available to children and families
Increase citizen involvement in local service planning and delivery
Educate leaders and stakeholders about the realities, challenges and rewards of foster, kinship and adoptive parenting
Advocate for greater support of foster, kinship and adoptive families by federal, state and local agencies

Our Mission: The Coalition unites foster, adoptive and kinship care families, giving them a voice and providing support, information and advocacy. By fostering communication and collaboration between families, agencies and concerned citizens, we seek to ensure the stability, well-being and permanency of all children touched by the child welfare system.

Our Vision:That no foster, adoptive or kinship care family in New York State will feel alone or unsupported and that all such families will have the tools, support and community they need to nurture their children and be role models for others.
