More About National Bowling Day

The second Saturday in August is National Bowling Day, a holiday to commemorate one of America's classic sports. This is a day to promote the sport and encourage families and friends to spend time together on the lanes.

Bowling is the largest participatory sport in the United States with more than 67 million Americans taking to the lanes each year.

The first National Bowling Day was organized by The Bowling Proprietor’s Association of America, Inc. in conjunction with General Cigar Company and NBC-TV in 1956.

Millions of bowlers came out for the televised event in order to raise money for the American Red Cross. National Bowling Day has never been repeated on the same scale but the movement begun in 1956 has carried on since then.

Did you know?
Bowling was played in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea. However, this has been the only bowling Olympic appearance.
