More About “Mardi Gras Morning” at Historic City Hall

Lake Charles, La.—A new exhibition “Mardi Gras Morning” will open at Historic City Hall, 1001 Ryan Street, on Saturday, January 7. It features the works of New Orleans-based Cajun French artist Lauren Marie Breaux. Her exhibit includes more than 60 works on display through March 18 in the second floor marble gallery.

“This exhibit shines a light on my favorite part of Mardi Gras, Tuesday morning,” explained Breaux. “Having been born and raised in Louisiana surrounded by Carnival, I have love for every facet of the celebration. After 30 plus years, my heart lives for Fat Tuesday morning. This magical time is best taken in after waking with the sun, adorning yourself in costume, eating a solid snack, and making it downtown as soon as possible.”

Breaux is a Lake Charles native and has been creating for as long as she can remember. However, she first began painting only six years ago and in so doing, she found her vibrant, color-drenched calling. She specializes in Acrylic painting and Photography. Painting almost exclusively from her own reference photographs, she brings it full circle from seeing and capturing her inspiration, then bringing them new life on the canvas.

“I wanted to create art that made you feel like you were there, which often means major sensory overload in every direction you look. Anywhere you turn is another slew of masterful costumes made of cardboard and glitter. Every year, I am in absolute awe of the creative genius that goes into these wearable art pieces. There are no rules; just be whatever your heart desires and use anything you can find. Not only did I want to create art that brought you into the crowds of Mardi Gras day, I also wanted to create permanent tributes to these extraordinary costumes. Every single one is its own masterpiece. Standing, watching, you often feel as though you’ll never soak it all in, but that’s okay, because this celebration of community and individual creativity keeps you in the present moment. Really, all you can do is be there and be grateful you experienced it all.”

Historic City Hall is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, please call 491-9147 or visit Click for Details.
