Through this course led by Dr. W. Bernard Carlson, you will come to appreciate how technology undergirds history, defining and shaping daily life, social structure, and how humans find meaning in the world. Dr. W. Bernard Carlson is a professor in the Department of Engineering and Society at the University of Virginia, where he directs the Engineering Business Program. After each DVD lecture there will be a brief discussion period.

March 8 Lectures:
Paper and Printing. Survey the development of writing rom the days of clay tablets and parchment through the development of the printing press and moveable type.
Gunpowder, Canons, and Guns. Begin with the origins of gunpowder in ancient China and trace its movement to Europe with consideration as to how cannons and firearms changed the face of warfare.

March 22 Lectures:
Telescopes and Microscopes. Learn how the development of optical technology drove the Scientific Revolution, setting the stage for Galileo and others to establish the scientific method of observation.
The Caravel and Celestial Navigation. Better ships, information about wind and currents, and new navigation techniques brought about remarkable political and economic change throughout Europe.
