More About Annual Plant Sale of the Maplewood Garden Club

This Spring the Maplewood Garden Club will hold its 86th Annual Plant Sale at the Maplewood Community Pool on May 11, 12, and 13. Known around the state as the best plant sale of the year, the MGC has been bringing great plants to the people of NJ since FDR was in the White House.
The annual plant sale is the only fundraiser held by MGC each year, and it is intended to offer exceptional plant material—often unusual or rare—at below market prices to the gardening community.
The Club has long term relationships with some of the best growers in the country and, under the guidance of expert and master gardeners, dedicated volunteers begin potting-up bare root perennials mid-winter to grow them on for the sale, nurturing them in the MGC nursery garden cold frames and municipal greenhouses. Vegetables, herbs, annuals and hanging baskets are purchased from local growers and delivered directly to the sale site, ensuring the highest quality plant material. Specialty annuals and tender perennials are propagated by Club members adding hard to find varieties not often seen. Friendly and knowledgeable Club members are on hand to give help and advice. Many of the 170 Club members participate in the effort to bring this notable event to the public.
The funds raised enable us to support the ongoing projects and activities including: Scholarships to Columbia High School Seniors and Rutgers University Students, the Dickens Village Conservatory, the Durand-Hedden herb garden, the Hilton Rain Garden, Maplewood Library book donations, Maplewood Township greenhouses, the Memorial Garden behind Town Hall, holiday decorations at the railroad station, and numerous gardens around town.
