TOLLESTON DUNES TRAIL

The Tolleston Dunes Trail follows 10,000 year-old sand dunes that were formed when Lake Michigan was 25 feet higher than in recent years. Tolleston is the second youngest of four distinct dune systems found within the national lakeshore. Together these dune ridges provide a glimpse into the changing shoreline of Lake Michigan. You can hike the trail year-round, cross-country ski when snow permits, or walk to the accessible overlook point that has interpretive wayside exhibits.

Wolf Lake Memorial Park is home to boating, kayaking, fishing, windsurfing and a full host of outdoor recreational activities.
Visitors enjoy the Pavilion at Wolf Lake and the Aquatic Center, which are linked to the Hammond Marina and area amenities by way of a pedestrian trail.

Welcome to Friendship Botanic Gardens, where forested woodlands, sprawling open spaces, and cultivated gardens spill over 100 acres of land that have been a tourist destination since 1936. Gardens are tucked throughout the beautiful valley of Trail Creek.
Visit Lake Lucerne, a spring fed lake and home to muskrats, geese and turtles. The woods are home to deer, raccoons, groundhogs, squirrels, foxes, coyotes and wild turkeys. The songs of birds are heard in the quiet of this valley surrounded by hills. The grounds are accessed by walking earthen trails and lawns.
Open from May through the end of October on Wednesdays through Sundays from 10am-6pm CST. Admission is $6, children under 12 are FREE. Members have access to grounds year round from dawn to dusk.

HERON ROOKERY

Watch the Great Blue Herons return to their "rookery" in mid-March when they repair their nest. The herons are visible until early May when the new leaves on the trees block the view. The rest of the summer and into the fall they can be seen feeding in the shallow waters throughout the Dunes Region. Spring wild flowers are in bloom from late March until early June. Bird watch during the spring and fall migration. You can also fish and watch fish swim in the Little Calumet River.

The Pinhook Bog area features two very different habitats. The Upland Trail highlights a rich Beech and Maple forest growing on top of a glacial moraine formed about 15,000 years ago. The Bog Trail leads to a depression in the moraine created when a large piece of ice broke off the melting glacier. The Bog Trail has Restricted Access. Access to the Bog Trail requires advance approval and accompaniment by authorized staff.There are ranger-led open houses on weekends in the summer. Open house dates and times can be obtained by calling the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Visitor Center at (219) 395-1882. Hike the upland trail, join a ranger led tour, view spring wild flowers, or bird watch during spring and fall migration.

The Washington Park Zoo founded in 1928, encompasses 15 acres on a hilly sand dune and located near the southern shore of beautiful Lake Michigan. The zoo exhibits more than 90 species originating throughout the world. The animals are exhibited in natural settings, surrounded by botanical plantings. Among the exhibits are Bengal tigers, Cotton top tamarins, American alligators, Grizzly bear, Grey kangaroos, Ring-tailed lemurs, River otters, Bald eagles, and more.

Imagination Glen is the largest of the parks in Portage, covering 256 acres. It has softball and soccer complexes and the 10 mile "Outback Trail", which is perfect for mountain bikers and walkers. The trails stretch through beautiful forest area along Salt Creek. Also see the "Iron Horse Heritage Trail" at the south end, which now is connected to the "Prairie Duneland Trail". There is also a playground for children.
