Organizers of the Mountain Maryland Music Institute recently announced the 2019 music sessions taking place this summer at Garrett College.
As part of the exciting, summer music enrichment program, participants will focus on ensemble rehearsal and performance in concert band, choir, and string ensemble settings; expert instruction by regional educators and performing artists; individual and group instruction; emphasis on music theory and musicianship, and traditional camp activities for youth.
“Mountain Maryland Music Institute is excited to be offering music camp programming for the fourth year. This year we have added two new components, including strings and piano,” stated Dr. Sean Beachy, director of the music institute. “We also have three new instructors joining our faculty. In addition, scholarships are available for those who may need financial assistance.”
Beginning June 24th and ending June 28th are two sessions: Strings (ages 12-17) and Piano (ages 8-17).
Choral (ages 8-11) and High School Instrumental will take place July 8th – July 12th.
July 15th – July 19th, is the final session is planned for Middle School Choral & Instrumental.
A total of six instructors will be leading the above sessions, including: Dr. Sean Beachy, Debi Beachy, Dr. Brian Plitnik, Dr. Elizabeth Etnoyer, Dr. Andrew Kohn, and Dr. Matthew Swallow.
Dr. Sean Beachy earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in applied piano at Alderson Broaddus College; a master’s of music from Shenandoah University, and doctorate of music arts in composition from West Virginia University. He serves as the instructor of music at Garrett College, and is the instructor of music theory. He also directs the Garrett Jazz Ensemble and is interim director of the Garrett Community Concert Band.
A West Virginia native, Debi Beachy has been a choral music education for over 18 years. She attended Alderson Broaddus University, earning a bachelor’s of arts degree in music education with an emphasis in piano. In 2006, she earned a master’s of music degree in music education with an emphasis in choral conducting from West Virginia University.
A brass instructor, Dr. Brian Plitnik earned his undergraduate music degree from Frostburg State University and his doctorate of music arts in trombone performance at West Virginia University. He is currently instructor of trombone and director of trombone ensembles at West Virginia University, while also serving as professor of music at Potomac State College.
Dr. Elizabeth Etnoyer is a piano instructor, serving as accompanying coordinator for vocal and instrumental music as well as solo and chamber piano instructor at Dickinson College. She holds a doctorate of musical arts and master of music degrees in piano performance from West Virginia University. She is also a winner of the young artist concerto competitions at both WVU and Alderson Broaddus, where she earned a bachelor of arts in applied music.
Dr. Andrew Kohn teaches string bass, music theory, and music in world cultures at West Virginia University. He holds his doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh, and received the only AD in double bass awarded by the Peabody Conservatory.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Dr. Matthew Swallow attended Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor’s of music degree in music education and saxophone performance. Additionally, he also obtained a master of music degree from Miami University of Ohio and a doctorate in musical arts from West Virginia University, both in saxophone performance. Swallow is also a woodwind instructor.
