Western Maryland Health System to celebrate Pastoral Care Week 10/21-25

More About Western Maryland Health System to celebrate Pastoral Care Week 10/21-25

Once again this year, Western Maryland Health System will celebrate Pastoral Care Week from October 21-25. This year marks the 34th year for the event. This year’s theme, “Hospitality: Cultivating Space”, offers a rich opportunity to develop relationships and extend hospitality to those who extend spiritual care, to those who collaborate with spiritual care providers and to those who are the recipients of the spiritual care.
The observance also celebrates the education for and practice of spiritual care through professional chaplaincy and pastoral counseling, interpreting and promoting pastoral care and honoring and celebrating all practitioners of pastoral care. This week is also a time to express appreciation to institutions and their staff who support pastoral care ministries.
“Pastoral care has been an important part of our society and well-being since humanity sought meaning and connection in its life together, “said Rev. Bruce McBride, Director of Pastoral Care. “Religions and communities have valued its supportive influence. We honor our chaplains and prayer partners who serve here at WMHS and minister to patients and staff on our campus everyday and we strive to show compassion with the love of God to hurting families. Our chaplains are available 24/7 to minister to any family in need.”
Clergy, eucharistic ministers and other religious professionals from throughout the tri-state area are always welcome to provide spiritual support to members of their faith who are receiving care at WMHS.
Pastoral care services also are available for persons receiving home care or hospice services. The support a chaplain provides during these home visits can be very beneficial for patients and their families who are dealing with a serious illness or end-of-life issues.
In addition to Pastor McBride, the other faithful servants on the WMHS campus include Seth Wharton, Hospice chaplain, the Chaplain team of Velma Lewis, Carolyn Wilson, Sam Seletyn, Rusty Kitzmiller, Gary Barkley, Paul Demers and Mark Perman, and prayer partners Angelo Bucchino, Sheila Hager, Terry McKenzie, Ron Peterson and Ken and O’Nile McKinney. The WMHS Pastoral Care team will be visiting every patient during the week of Oct. 21-25.

Members of the Pastoral Care Team at Western Maryland Health System include, from left to right, Chaplains Sam Seletyn, Gary Barkley, Bruce McBride, Rusty Kitzmiller, Seth Wharton, Melissa Jessen, Paul Demers, Caroline Wilson, Mark Perman and Velma Lewis.

More About this Event Poster: UPMC Western Maryland

In 2018, WMHS and UPMC joined together in a clinical affiliation to work cooperatively to enhance healthcare services and to strengthen the delivery of quality care, transform care delivery and reduce the total cost of providing care in the community. In March 2019, the Boards of Directors of both WMHS and UPMC signed a non-binding letter of intent to negotiate an affiliation agreement. Following a nine-month regulatory review and due diligence process by WMHS and UPMC, the Boards co-signed a binding integration and affiliation agreement on January 15, 2020, setting February 1, as the target date for finalizing the affiliation.

“Throughout our research and discussions with UPMC, we became increasingly confident and excited about becoming part of a world-class academic medical center which shares our vision for providing quality patient care,” said Rolf Haarstad, chair of the WMHS Board of Directors. “Our mutual mission is to continue to bring cutting-edge, evidence-based medicine to patients close to home.”

“UPMC has a long, successful track record of affiliations with like-minded hospitals. We know how much this hospital means to the region, and we are thrilled that WMHS has chosen to join UPMC,” said Leslie C. Davis, senior vice president, UPMC, and executive vice president and chief operating officer, UPMC Health Services Division.

UPMC has committed to make certain capital investments to enhance services and upgrade facilities in the Western Maryland region. These investments by UPMC, along with investments that the WMHS Foundation has made and continues to make, will help ensure that UPMC Western Maryland will continue to provide state-of-the-art, quality healthcare for residents as well as maintaining its position as one of the largest employers in the region for years to come.

The new affiliation does not affect patients’ insurance coverage. UPMC Western Maryland will continue to honor the contracts it has in place with regional and national insurers and has reaffirmed its commitment to continue working with multiple payors in the future.

The board of UPMC Western Maryland consists of 12 directors, including 8 appointed by the current WMHS board and 4 designated by the UPMC board.
