Spring Concert with Susquehanna Chorale thru 5/12

More About Spring Concert with Susquehanna Chorale thru 5/12

This concert celebrates the roots - spiritual, relational, musical - that give us wings; the experiences that provide the stability we need to dream, take risks, to soar!

The program opens with songs celebrating our faith and musical roots. Among them are Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine, American spirituals, and the perfect melding of the concept of “roots and wings” with Rhonda Sandberg’s modern arrangement of Bach’s Come, Sweet Death.

The modern lullaby Jenny Rebecca, Bob Chilcott’s setting of Christina Rosetti’s poem “Remember Me,” and Eriks Esenvald’s stunning setting of Sara Teasdale’s “Only in Sleep” all speak movingly of the experience of looking back at our earliest or most important passages.

Songs from early America conclude the program, among them old American folk songs and Shawn Kirchner’s arrangement of the 19th-century hymn Angel Band, which movingly combines the threads of faith, relational, and musical roots.

The Susquehanna Chorale, founded in 1981 by Artistic Director Linda Tedford, has emerged as one of the outstanding choral ensembles in the United States. The 36-voice chamber choir is recognized by critics and audiences alike for its commitment to excellence and for its artistic interpretation of choral works of many styles and historical periods. Reflecting its dedication to the music of our time, the group has performed the East Coast premieres of many outstanding works, and it has commissioned several new works for its concert series. Past seasons have included performances at the Washington National Cathedral, conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, the PA House of Representatives at the State Capitol, and most recently at Chautauqua Institution in upstate New York. The Chorale has also toured Great Britain, Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. In addition to performing regularly with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, the Susquehanna Chorale is the Ensemble in Residence at Messiah College in Grantham, PA. The Susquehanna Chorale is honored to be the recipient of Chorus America’s highest national award: The Margaret Hillis Achievement Award for Choral Excellence. The group’s cds have received national recognition, with two – Wondrous Love and American Treasures – receiving consideration for a Grammy nomination.

The Chorale is funded, in part, by the Cultural Enrichment Fund, the capital region’s united arts fund, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.

Tickets are available through the Chorale’s web site or by calling the Messiah College box office. Also, discounts are available for groups of 10 or more.
