More About Nature Now - Lubeznik Center for the Arts Fall Exhibition

Lubeznik Center for the Arts (LCA) is pleased to announce the upcoming Fall Exhibition - Nature Now - which will be on display from October 25, 2021 through February 25, 2022.

The artists in the Nature Now exhibition create works that explore the transient and cyclical nature of life and reflect upon the impact humans have on the world.

Humans have a precarious relationship with nature - they revere it, yet struggle to live in harmony with it. Finding a balance is threatened by a consumeristic culture where human demands put the earth and other species in danger.

The artists of Nature Now address these issues in their work with the hope of encouraging conversations that help us move beyond an anthropocentric world, and become more sustainable, equitable, and just.

Participating Artists:
Herman Aguirre
Christa Donner
Doug Fogelson
Stacey Lee Gee
Holly Greenberg
Heidi Norton
Mark Rospenda
Tom Van Eynde

Herman Aguirre's body of work is comprised of paintings depicting the traumatic events that have directly affected him as a Mexican American, his loved ones, and his community. His intent is to shed light on issues regarding war, trauma, and loss with his paintings, such as Testigos de Guerro, 2018, at right.

"Within these works, I undergo the spiritual process of mourning while commemorating those who have been subject to mayhem and those who are no longer with us," Aguirre states.

Featured artist Holly Greenberg’s piece, Crossing the Bar (right), references Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem by the same name in which he describes a mariner’s surrender toward his own death.

"This work attempts to capture the moment when life leaves the living. Although dying is a gradual process, the moment that the body ceases to be alive is an exact instance," says Greenburg.

Crossing the Bar serves as the artist's vision of a harbinger of what lies ahead for the environment.

As a mother and an educator, Christa Donner is interested in addressing the consequences of human impact on the planet.

"I think about how selfish and arrogant humans can be and how much we have to learn from observing and listening to other organisms. Humans are not masters of the natural world."

The goal of Donner’s works, such as Cellular Healing (right), is to explore and suggest models for moving beyond the consumerism of life today, becoming more sustainable, equitable and just.
