More About CES presents Trick of the Light Theatre in "The Griegol"

A tale without words about death, love and monsters

After their grandmother passes away, a child suspects they are being pursued by the shape-shifting smoke demon from the old woman’s stories.

In the vein of "Spirited Away" and "Coraline," "The Griegol" is a mythic, gorgeously rendered dark fantasy for brave children and lovers of atmospheric theatre. Drawing on the techniques of early cinema, it conjures magic and laughter out of silhouettes, puppetry, live music and animation.

Following each performance, the artists will meet with audience members for an in-depth discussion about their artistic process, inspiration, and how they use shadowplay, music and animation to wordlessly create the eerie, dark fantasy world of "The Griegol." The sessions will be moderated by Chuck Dicken of WFWM-FM, FSU's NPR-affiliate radio station, as part of the Offstage With WFWM series.

$20 adult; $18 FSU faculty/staff, military; $15 youth under 18; FSU students FREE

This performance is recommended for adults and children ages 7 and up.

Trick of the Light is an award-winning theatre company from Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington) in Aotearoa/New Zealand, founded by Hannah Smith and Ralph McCubbin Howell. The company makes theatre that is playful, inventive, thought-provoking and that speaks to the here and now. Their productions range from dark crossover works for adults and older children to biting political satire but are unified by engaging, nuanced stories, inventive design and the belief that theatre should resonate with the wider world.

This engagement of Trick of the Light is made possible in part through the Performing Arts Global Exchange a program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts with assistance from the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory board, and the Embassy of Australia in Washington, D.C.
