23rd Annual Quilt Gala

23rd Annual Quilt Gala

More About 23rd Annual Quilt Gala

The Horry County Museum Quilt Gala has become a fixture on the Grand Strand. Started in 1994, the first Gala was held on the lawn of the Horry County Courthouse. Over the years the Gala has continued to grow and is now held at the Ocean Lakes Family Campground Recreation Center in Myrtle Beach.
At the Gala many different types of quilts are displayed which represent a variety of techniques and skill levels. Categories include wearables, large quilts, medium quilts, small quilts, and a challenge. The wearables are handmade garments sewn using a variety of quilting techniques. The challenge category changes each year and is based on preset restrictions. The 2017 challenge theme is “Beatlemania”. Beatlemania all started on February 7, 1964 when the Fab 4 crossed the pond and arrived in the USA becoming one of the most incredible music sensations of the past 50 years. Quilters in this category must choose one of their iconic songs or album titles for their inspiration and create a wall hanging which depicts that title.
Winners of each category will be voted on by the public and will receive a ribbon. The blue ribbon winners from each category are displayed in the Horry County Museum during the month of March.
In addition to displaying quilts, the Gala also hosts demonstrators, speakers, and a featured quilter. Along with the beautiful quilts, local and regional vendors will be on hand to support, consult, and aid the quilter with various quilting merchandise.
The Museum is grateful to have the support of local quilt guilds for many years to aid in the management, set-up, and break down of the Gala.
The 23rd annual Quilt Gala will be held Friday February 24th from 10 am–4 pm and Saturday February 25th from 10am-4pm. Admission is $5.00 per person; children 12 and under are free.

More About this Event Poster: Horry County Museum

The Horry County Museum was established in 1979 and opened its doors to the public in 1981. The Museum focuses on the history, pre-history, and natural history of Horry County, S.C., and educates the public about these subjects through exhibits, outreach programs, and events. In 2009, the Museum opened the L. W. Paul Living History Farm. The Farm is a re-creation of life on a one horse family farm between the years of 1900-1955. Visitors to the farm can experience what life was like in a farm community during those years and attend quarterly events at the Farm. In 2014, the Museum moved into the renovated 1905 Burroughs School. The school is on the National Register of Historic Places. The move includes increased exhibits, a freshwater aquarium featured on Animal Planet’s hit reality show “Tanked”, and a 600 seat auditorium that hosts public presentations and programs.
