Sale offers expert advice and more than 100 types of flowers, grasses, shrubs and trees

The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County invites gardeners to plant local and think global by shopping at its Native Plant Sale on Friday, May 10 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mayslake Peabody Estate, 1717 W. 31st St. in Oak Brook.

New this year, the Friends of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, the District’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit support group, will give away 200 bur oak, 200 swamp white oak and 100 red oak sapling to interested attendees.

Shoppers should look for staff with “plant expert” caps at the sale to answer questions and provide advice on creating inviting habitats in their own backyards. Purchases can be paid for with cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express. All proceeds from the sale will support the District’s educational programming.

Plants at the sale originate from seed collected within 100 miles of DuPage County and are not treated with insecticides containing neonicotinoids, which are harmful to bees and other insect pollinators. Gardeners who landscape with native plants help wildlife by providing habitat vital to preserving biodiversity.

Gardeners can also get free wood chips at the District’s Blackwell native plant nursery, 29W218 Mack Road in West Chicago, on Saturday, May 11 and 18 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
