More About Discovering Earth's Treasures: an Earth Day Celebration

"Discovering Earth's Treasures," an Earth Day celebration, will be held from 10am-3pm Saturday, April 21 at the Princeton Public Library and pollinator garden.

Activities will include a treasure hunt, free trees and seeds. Prizes will include a Little Free Library and a children’s bicycle and helmet. Educational displays will offer information about vermiculture (growing worms), how gardening can attract monarch butterflies, and the benefits of bike riding. The Library Cafe will have a special menu for the day that features spring flavors and hemp milk drinks.

Volunteers will also be able to create a unique natural art piece called an “earth mandela” from flowers, leaves and stones.

Representatives of Hungry World Farm, near Tiskilwa, the Wetlands Initiative, Bureau County Soil & Water Conservation District, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, University of Illinois Extension and Nature Conservancy will also offer indoor presentations or outdoor exhibits. Topics will include pollution prevention, growing industrial hemp, home and community gardening, recycling and many other subjects.

Co-hosted by the Princeton Public Library, Voices from the Prairie and nearly a dozen other organizations, the event will include educational, artistic and participatory activities for children, youth and adults.

Its purpose is to remind people of all ages how they can help preserve the earth’s natural resources and improve human beings’ role in enhancing the quality of life for all living things.
