More About The Science of Happiness with Sangeeta Bansal, PH.D
This course is an exploration into the nebulous concept of happiness. Every human being desires to be happy and to stay away from suffering, and we undertake everything in our lives to meet this basic desire. Despite this intrinsic motivation which drives every action we take, at times we inadvertently find ourselves caught in a vortex of unhappiness. How does this transpire? How do we find ourselves in this undesirable place, and what (if anything) can we do to extricate ourselves?
Advanced research from neuroscience, sociology and psychology confirm what contemplative wisdom traditions have always knows: happiness is an inside job! It is a state of mind rather than a function of external circumstances. This puts the onus of bringing happiness back into our lives directly upon us. This is exactly what we will explore in this course, and we see how we can move past some of life's deepest traumas and regain what is rightfully ours - pure happiness. Through techniques of mindfulness and meditation, backed by scientific as well as contemplative research, we will explore how the mind can be trained to create conditions of happiness and wellbeing for ourselves and those around us.
In the first week we will explore to tools to enhance personal happiness levels. These include meditation, mindful consumption of food, mindful interaction with nature, mindful touch, and mindful communication with other people. In the second week we will deep dive into love and marriage – one of the key ingredients for a life of happiness. What can we do to enhance the quality of one of the most important relationships in our lives. Next, we will explore how we can live a life of passion and purpose versus one of lassitude and stupor. We will explore what role does money have to play in raising our level of happiness. Finally, we will focus on some key practices/ meditations we can incorporate into our lives such as cognitive reappraisal, letting go of the blame game, practicing non-reactivity, forgiveness and burning of old regrets and grudges.
