More About Arts in the Park

AIP 2018 Aug 15 & 16

What a line-up Arts in the Park has for you this coming week. First of all on Wednesday, Junior & the Igniters will be singing the blues and more with the LPHS Marching Band showcasing their 2018 program at 6pm. Then on Thursday, the #1 Beatles Tribute Band, American English will be giving a special 2 hour concert starting at 6:00 pm. Come on out to Dennis Smith Amphitheater at the Fox Memorial Park on Truesdell Avenue. You can’t miss it. Parking is available on Truesdell Avenue and from McClung Road.

Wednesday

6:00 pm - The La Porte High School Marching Band will give us a sneak preview of what they’ll be playing at the ball games this season and what tunes will be part of their competition repertoire. Last year, The LPHS Marching Band received a Gold Division Rating at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Scholastic A Class State Preliminaries and advanced to the Scholastic Class State Finals, placing 4th in the state. The band also received the designation of “With Distinction” for their high scores in the general effect and visual captions under the direction of Mickey Stisher. A new year! A new band! What exciting performances will these youth do?

Also as part of the pre-concert line-up Rich Snyder will perform the national anthem and Sandy Young, a member of La Porte Arts in the Park, will read poetry.

7:00 pm - Junior and the Igniters take the stage. Since 1995 Junior and the Igniters have stayed in the music scene quickly becoming one of Northern Indiana’s favorite bands for blues, rockabilly, and American roots. To find more about the band go to juniorbluesband.com

The trio includes Junior Combs as lead guitarist and vocalist, Jesse Lee Scutchfield who also does lead vocals and standup bass, and Mike McCalmet on drums. A favorite at Arts in the Park, the group has been asked back year after year.

You can keep this group and others that you like coming back to Arts in the Park by voting for your favorite bands this season on artsintheparklaporte.com.

Thursday

You will hear Bob Penney open with the national anthem and Dr. Scott Simerlein, La Porte County Poet Laureate read poetry.

6:00 - American English brings a two hour concert to Arts in the Park. Jim Irizarry from Chicago was inspired by the Beatles’ music and fit naturally into the role of John Lennon. His voice captures the same range and timbre. He’s performed with various musical groups and several reputable Beatles tribute groups. Despite a physical resemblance, Ric Michals has many things in common with Paul McCartney, whom he portrays, including being a versatile vocalist. He’s proficient on piano, organ and guitar. James Paul performs as George Harrison, identifying with his personality and having a passion for guitar. He’s proficient on bass, piano, drums and other instruments, writes songs and records original music of his own. Tom Gable becomes Ringo Starr on stage duplicating Ringo’s voice and the unorthodox drumming style. He adjusts his rhythms to suit the song. We also want to mention En Zemanek, keyboardist and sound architect for American English plays Sir George Martin, The Beatles’ producer performing orchestrations and special effects.
