More About Arts in the Park

June, July and August
Wednesday and Thursday Evenings - 7pm

The first month of the 2018 Summer Season of Arts in the Park has been terrific. Wonderful bands, new fun free activities for the kids, such as Kids & Canvas and corn hole game and dancing on the floor in front of the band. It’s so much fun to watch children dance and play and be kids. Adults too are letting loose and dancing.

Arts in the Park is free, thanks to generous sponsors, donors, and volunteers. Free admission to hear high-quality entertainers. At that price, everyone should come. The amphitheater is wheelchair accessible and child friendly. Transporte is available by calling 219-362-6565. Check the website after 3pm the day of the concert for information on weather related cancellations.

Here’s what’s happening this week:

Wednesday June 20

La Porte City Band performs at 7:00 pm at the Dennis Smith Amphitheater, Truesdell Avenue, Fox Park across from Clear Lake. Make this hour of enjoyment, led by Chuck Steck, a regular night out through July on your summer calendar

Popeye’s Poppin’ in the Park Concessions will be selling beef hotdogs, homemade cookies, popcorn, pop, and water near the band shell. All proceeds go to the building project.

With up to 2500 people coming for concerts each week, a new $140,000 building will provide a permanent concessions, changing room for visiting bands, and much needed bathrooms. The grants have come through, construction is underway. You can still help through your donations and purchases in the various raffles, concessions, T-shirts, Pampered Chef, or Premier Jewelry. June’s raffle prizes are courtesy of Hair Control, Four Winds Casino, and Briar Leaf/Portofinos.

Thursday June 21

Popeye’s Poppin’ in the Park Concessions will be open. New this year, at the top of the hill, Taco My Fren and Hero’s All Beef ¼ Pound Hot Dogs will also be selling. A portion of these sales also goes to Arts in the Amphitheater Expansion Project.

Thursday’s pre-concert show will be put on by Good Time Cloggers from Valparaiso, Indiana. The Good Time Cloggers have performed in the Northwest Indiana region at festivals, fairs, and special occasions. Clogging is a dance originated in the Appalachian Mountains and has migrated over the years across the states, varying from region to region.

If you’ve ever thought it looked like fun, now is your chance. Good Time Cloggers will not only perform, but will also teach a class. Come. Dance. Have a great time. Wooden shoes are not required to learn the steps.

Leigh Morris, former Mayor of La Porte, and a veteran performer of La Porte Little Theatre will read poetry. Afyah and Joseph Giuliani will sing “The Star Spangled Banner”.

At 7:00 pm feature band, High Noon, winner of several Country Showdowns and runner up for both the Indiana and Illinois State Finals, will bring their high energy performance to the stage. The group combines original music with old favorites and chart toppers. Since its inception in the early 90’s, High Noon has developed into one of the most recognized and accomplished bands in the region. High Noon has opened for Montgomery Gentry, Jason Michael Carroll, Clint Black, Charlie Daniels, Dylan Scott, the Henningsens and Phil Vassar and has played with Garth Brooks.

Guitarist Andy Fowler started High Noon when he was still in high school with aspirations of becoming a national act. Lead singer Andy Mead performs acoustic shows in Chicago. Keyboard player, Butch Sisco, played three years at the White House during the Clinton administration. His thirty years of experience include playing with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Roger Spinger. Drummer Eddie Haack, like the rest of the band members, has been involved with music since a child and was introduced early to public performances. He played five years with a band called, “Boot Leg” before joining in 1994 with High Noon. Mario Samaniego, who plays bass for the band, also plays several other instruments and has two solo CDs. Among others, he’s shared stage with Jason Aldean, Big and Rich, and Three Dog Night.
