More About Chalk the Block
The 5th Annual Uptown Chalk the Block held on Saturday, July 24 & Sunday, July 25, 2021 was the most well-attended to date and uptown is now beaming with color and beauty from artists of all ages and skill!
We had 7 professional artists come in from Michigan, Ohio, and different parts of Pennsylvania, including right here in Somerset. Their art ranged from Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” to Pixar’s “Inside Out”, to beautiful wildlife pieces including a blue jay, a butterfly, a 3-D safari scene, and a traveling terrapin, to a beautiful portrait of Reading Rainbow’s and Jeopardy’s host, LaVar Burton.
14 Emerging Artists competed in the Adult Competition and over 40 Youth Artists competed to chalk the uptown sidewalks in hopes to win a prize! Nearly 1,000 people came out to enjoy & create art, listen to live music, shop locally, and enjoy delicious food from local eateries or a food truck. On Saturday, the Kids Zone was ‘chalk-full’ with children of all ages participating in activities hosted by local human service agencies! The Chalk the Block 5k also made a comeback this year and 57 registrants participated on Sunday morning starting and ending at the Union Street playground. All of this activity garnered press from the Tribune Review, Tribune Democrat, The Daily American, WJAC featuring our event leading up to and following the weekend.
